O seguinte som é o de um microondas. Contudo, parece também o som de um exaustor ou de uma maquina de soprar folhas ou  ate mesmo de um aspirador. Achei interessante esta dualidade e que pensando bem a maioria das máquinas têm o mesmo som e até nem nos apercebemos disso no dia a dia porque com a visão conseguimos distinguir que são objetos diferentes. Este áudio contribuiu para a minha opinião sobre a importância da visão e audição como sentidos.

The sound of lighting a gas stove in a domestic setting begins with the sharp click of the ignition, followed by the sudden whoosh as the flame ignites. A faint hiss accompanies the steady flow of gas, creating a subtle yet distinct background noise. As the intensity of the flame is adjusted, there’s a noticeable change in sound: turning the knob higher produces a louder, more forceful hiss, while lowering it softens the sound to a gentle whisper.

The act of experimenting with different flame levels introduces a dynamic interplay of sounds, reflecting both control and functionality in this everyday moment.

Home Environment - Lighting the gas stove

The process of programming a washing machine, already loaded with clothes, detergent, and fabric softener, begins with the soft clicks and beeps as buttons are pressed to select the desired settings. The machine hums briefly, signaling readiness, before the cycle starts. As water begins to flow into the drum, a gentle whoosh can be heard, followed by intermittent splashes as the clothes soak. The drum then begins to rotate slowly, producing a rhythmic whirring sound that grows steadier as the wash cycle progresses.

Throughout its operation, the washing machine emits distinct auditory patterns that are easily recognizable in a domestic environment. The initial wash phase alternates between steady rotations and brief pauses, creating a repetitive whir-swish-whir cadence. As the cycle transitions to rinsing and spinning, the sounds intensify—the drum spins faster, producing a louder hum and occasional vibrations. These mechanical rhythms blend into the household ambiance, accompanied by other background noises like distant voices or appliances, creating a familiar and comforting domestic soundscape.

The recording of the domestic sound of using a key in a security lock captures a rich array of metallic tones and mechanical interactions. The process begins with the insertion of the key, producing a crisp clink as metal meets metal. As the key is turned, a series of distinct clicks and clunks can be heard, each corresponding to the internal mechanisms of the lock engaging. Testing the lock by turning the key once or multiple times creates variations in these sounds, offering a range of rhythmic metallic patterns.

The sequence culminates in the opening and closing of the door, adding resonant sounds to the recording. These layers of sound provide a versatile palette for editing. Each element, from the subtle scrape of the key to the firm snap of the lock engaging, can be isolated and repurposed individually, making this recording suitable for creative or practical audio applications.

Home Environment - Testing the lock and closing the door

Recorded inside a Lisbon metro carriage, this sound captures passengers speaking Portuguese, station announcements, door bells, and the distinct sounds of the train accelerating and braking between stops.

Inside a traditional market, the ambient hum of customer conversations and vendor calls fills the background, while in the foreground, sharp crackling sounds dominate as hands manipulate and twist a plastic package.

Captured between rocky formations near the shore in Figueira da Foz, this recording features the reverberating wash of ocean waves echoing among the rocks, occasional faint human voices and footsteps in the distance, and the persistent sound of wind flowing across the microphone (EQed out).

Digital Cicadas is my reinterpretation and extension of natural cicada sounds.
Using a single cicada sound module, I continuously generate variations through different sets of parameter constraints and transformations.

In the Rewilding Project, I release these digitally extended cicada sounds into natural environments, where they engage in an improvised sonic "jam" with real cicadas.
They resonate with each other, yet it remains uncertain whether true communication occurs.
This co-performance has no clear leader; the sound field flows freely within it, carrying a diverse and constantly shifting vitality.

A razer machine is turned on or maybe there is a bee? Water starts filling in the sink. There is this low hum of a fan, an exhaust. The water tap is switched on, the water bubbles play with one another jumping on each other. A sharp noise of a glass and then objects being placed down on the marble. The hand is used to wipe off and clean the basin. An exhale of relief. Rubs off some cream on the skin.

Week Sound 1 -  Home Environment (“Breakfast”)

A walk across the city center of Coimbra. As I walk alongside the tourists, I hear a saxophone playing far away, almost calling me closer to it. A man is walking faster than me dragging his trolley bag. Maybe he's comes from a far away place. The people laugh and seem to be having a nice time. Far away, I can hear traffic but most closely, my synthetic jacket rubbing against each other. I hear a pop, maybe champagne? A lot of murmuring but a sweet little chirp could be heard towards the end.
