The fishing industry in South Sudan and its exports to neighbouring countries in East Africa are growing considerably, despite management gaps that are aggregating illegal and unregulated fishing practices in the country.

South Sudan may be the youngest country in the world, but it’s already undergone a huge amount of violence – and the ongoing civil war in Sudan looks set to bring further instability.

In this episode, Dr Costanza Torre and Dr Fiona McEwen discuss XCEPT’s research in South Sudan, which aims to understand how experiences of conflict may lead someone to engage in violent, instead of peaceful, behaviour. They discuss the importance of hiring local researchers, the challenges of carrying out research in South Sudan, and how mental health disorders may be understood differently in South Sudan. 

This research is being undertaken as part of a project called XCEPT, which is funded by UK International Development from the UK government; however, the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the UK government’s official policies.

Understanding conflict trauma and mental health in South Sudan

The South Sudan government official went to Kenya for peace talk last week, and people from South Sudan were not happy about it. they said meeting for peace talk should be within the Country.

Matthew Hollingworth has worked in conflict zones around the world, from Ukraine to South Sudan and Syria. Previously in charge of the World Food Programme’s (WFP) emergency operations in the West Bank and Gaza, Matthew was responsible for delivering life-saving aid to desperate people. 
“People ask me every single day when I'm in Gaza: “When will the bombs stop? When will the fighting stop? When will they stop blowing things up? When can I go home?” We don't have the answers. But we do know that that is what's needed.” 
WFP delivers food relief to more than 120 countries across the world suffering the impacts of conflicts, disasters and climate change. In this episode (recorded on 21 June 2024), Matthew Hollingworth reflects on his daily struggle to prevent famine in Gaza, on the apocalyptic scale of the destruction there, and on the morale boost he gets from working with extraordinary colleagues on the ground.

Peter Bichok describes his journey as a boy growing up in southern Sudan to a refugee camp in Kenya, where he earned a highschool diploma. After graduating from university in Nairobi, he became an entrepreneur in South Sudan and eventually ended up in Ithaca, New York.

Nyumba zao zimeharibika na kuacha watoto kuishi katika mazingira mabaya.

Climate change is already an existential threat in South Sudan. Devastating floods in recent months have left thousands of herders without their most precious possessions: goats, cows and cattle. The animals are central to livelihoods, diet and income, but also to age-old customs, including marriage and cultural traditions.

All risk being swept away or scorched by climate change.

In October, massive flooding affected 300,000 people in South Sudan – a hefty figure for a nation of 13 million, scarred by years of civil strife, where infrastructure is poor.

According to the UN World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Climate in Africa report published Monday, average surface temperature across Africa in 2024 were approximately 0.86°C above the 1991–2020 average.

North Africa recorded the highest temperature - 1.28°C above the 1991-2020 average; it is the fastest-warming sub-region of Africa.

"Flooding has continued to be more intense and appears more times within the year than it used to," said Meshack Malo, South Sudan Country Representative for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). "And that means that any short range then can easily trigger the flooding impact, because water and the soil remain quite saturated."

Livelihoods in South Sudan swept away by climate change, floods

Heavy fighting in South Sudan and Sudan has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis across East Africa, with the situation in Sudan's White Nile now critical, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said on Friday.

The state hosts 650,000 internally displaced people and 410,000 South Sudanese refugees. Many have been forced to move multiple times since war broke out in Sudan between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces in April 2023.

In just the last month, around 25,000 mostly women and children have crossed into Sudan’s White Nile state.

"This continued influx of South Sudanese refugees is placing additional pressure on already overstretched healthcare, water, sanitation, hygiene and protection services in nearly all of the neighbouring countries," said Dana Hughes, who is Deputy Head of Global Communications for UNHCR.
