He was a specimen,
bronze shoulders,
jawline like a meteor slicing atmosphere,
confidence radiating like a malfunctioning quasar.

We sat on the couch,
the air thick with subspace suggestion.
He leaned in, heroic glimmer in his eyes,
as if commissioning a starship,
and said, with cosmic certainty:

“Talk to them.”

Them.
His manly bits.
Laid out before me like grand sailing ship,
awaiting orders,
awaiting praise.

And I—
Kif in spirit,
apprentice to awkwardness,
still willing to orbit his gravity—
I cleared my throat,
my voice a stammering shuttle
and began
with the best joke 
I could think of in the moment. 

So this ventriloquist 
says to the farmer
“Mind if I talk to your dog?”

No reaction.
The general flexed in approval,
as if my hesitation were erotic hyperspace.

I carried on,
bla bla bla
“The dog says, ‘Yeah, doin’ all right.
He feeds me, walks me,
takes me to the lake.’”

Heroic grin faltering,
I rushed to the part about the horse.
“And the horse says,
‘He brushes me down,
keeps me in the shed,
rides me regularly.’”

By then,
the cosmos of his confidence collapsed
like a dying star.

But comedy,
like gravity, demands a third body,
I delivered a rousing setup, 
and delivered the punchline.
“And the farmer cries,
‘The sheep’s a liar!’”

Silence.
A black hole of silence.
No laughter,
no spark,
only the barnyard echo drifting through the void.

And there I was,
having attempted to seduce a celestial commander
with a provincial parable,
a space opera derailed by a sheep.

…We sat in mutual orbit,
heroic eyes still shining,
mine apologetic,
and between us,
the phantom sheep—
its testimony forever lost in the static.

Because in the end,
eroticism and ventriloquism
are galaxies that seldom touch.
