From the perspective of a walkabout on Armistice Day in downtown Tacoma, encountering Melissa Chaudhry delivering a speech to a combined crowd of citizens and anti-war veterans. The speech was given both out of great concern for Americans and for the plight of Chaudhry’s detained husband, Zahid, a decorated Army veteran, snatched by ICE just before his citizenship hearing in late August of 2025. Occasionally throughout, Zahid and Melissa’s small children were at her side or in her arms.

Zahid is being held without charges and without medical care at the Northwest Detention Facilty in Tacoma, WA. The Northwest Detention Facility is one of many government contracted operations lining the pockets of private investors and corporations. These operations require significant occupancy and beds filled by detainees to make their money, at which they are succeeding, hand over fist. The GEO Group, the operators and owners of the facility, is generating an estimated $55M in annual revenue for their contract funded by the US government and its taxpayers.

“Friends - good afternoon. My name is Melissa Chaudhry. Salaam aleikum - may peace be with you.

I want to thank the sun, rain, earth, and wind, that gives life to every one of us. I thank the Native people who have lived through genocide and chosen, despite the most unjust and destructive violence, to claim love. I lift my hands to you, I honor you, and I am humbly grateful for your welcome.

I also want to thank the organizers, About Face, Veterans for Peace, and everyone who stands here today - including my mother, who took me to my first protest at the age of eight years old, at the beginning of the Iraq War, holding a huge sign that said “Navy Wife for Peace.” She set me on this path, and I’m forever grateful.

Today is Armistice Day—the day the guns went silent.

A day once meant to honor peace, not power. Healing, not domination.

And yet, somehow, over time, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day—and in that renaming, America changed what it remembered.

We began to honor war more than peace, and uniforms more than humanity.

But today—here, together—we remember both.

We honor our veterans, and we honor the peace they were meant to be fighting for.
We honor those who served in the hope of building a nation worthy of its ideals—liberty, justice, mercy, for all. And we recognize the betrayal of that dedication, as our servicemembers have been turned into pawns of billionaires, serving the interests of the American empire - rather than the ideals of the American republic.

We also remember that half a mile from where we stand, behind concrete walls and barbed wire, sits a veteran who believed in those ideals.

A man who wore this nation’s uniform.

A man who was willing to give his life for the promise of this country.

A man who is now being held in a place worse than federal prison—by the very nation he once swore to defend.

That man is my husband, Zahid Chaudhry. President of the Rachel Corrie Chapter of Veterans for Peace.

In that low, windowless building on the Tacoma tide flats—anonymous among the warehouses and smokestacks—is one of the largest immigration detention centers in the United States.
Inside, over 1500 people are held in conditions that defy decency: no fresh air, no daylight, no meaningful exercise or yard time.”
