Splatoon is a third-person shooter video game released by Nintendo for the Wii U in May 2015. The game revolves around fictional characters known as Inklings - a type of anthropomorphic squid that can transform into both humanoid and cephalopod forms and can Swim through colorful paint sprayed onto surfaces across the game's map using various types of paint-based weapons. Splatoon has several distinct game modes, including four-player online multiplayer and a single-player campaign.

Splatoon received positive reviews, with several critics praising Nintendo's decision to enter a new genre with a new franchise. The game's overall style and presentation, gameplay mechanics, and its soundtrack were also praised. However, criticism was directed at the exclusion of voice chat and private lobbies, the small number of multiplayer maps at launch, and issues with online matchmaking. Nintendo provided post-launch support for the game by adding new maps and weapons and also a feature to allow users to create private lobbies and held limited events called "Splatfests". Splatoon has been nominated for numerous awards for various gaming outlets. A sequel called Splatoon 2 was released for the Nintendo Switch in July 2017
