In this episode of Planet Afropop, we explore the music and language of the Caribbean coasts’ Afro-indigenous Garinagu People of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, St. Vincent, and Nicaragua commonly known as the Garifuna.  The official story is that these are descendants of enslaved Africans who were shipwrecked on the Island of St. Vincent in 1635. The distinct Garifuna language and music challenge this narrative with mounting evidence emerging of an alternative origin story of the Afro-Caribes before trans- Atlantic slavery and Columbus. The Garifuna Collective takes us on a journey to explore these gaps in history through their new music, with their distinctive homegrown punta rock rhythms and paranda from their latest album, Aban whose meaning is One. Producer Muwkae Wabei Siyolwe caught up with the Garifuna Collective and Dr. Gwen Nunez Gonzales, a Garifuna language matriarch in Belize who shares the stories behind the resilience and cultural citizenship of the Garifuna people.

I started writing this song in 2010 when I was learning GarageBand and arrangements, that's why it's so long and there's multiple bridges, etc. but listening back on it I think that's okay. The song is about a woman unfulfilled with her cis her man so she leaves her man for another man, and this man is trans, and rides a motor cycle, and not only is he a better lover but he treats her like she's a real human being. I love how upfront she is about her affair, I love when women wield their power. A lot of my songs are written from a female perspective, from childhood I have been female inside and male on the outside. I think this is the only song of mine that makes that obvious narratively, at least lyrically. When I finally finished it in 2016 it was released under my former artist name The Venus in Scorpio and I removed it from the internet but this one is a fayv among my friends and I wanted to bring it back. I hope you enjoy it! I am proud of the lyrics, arrangements, production, etc. and my friend Jason Wright mixed, recorded, and mastered this one for me in Los Angeles in 2019. The artwork comes from a photo my friend took of me on a nude beach when I was 20, before all my tattoos and I used a font called Salty Mussy. Lyrics are below. Thank you <3
