Of all the songs you ever sang, of all the tunes you played
The one that at the heart strings tugged was the sad song 
that you prayed.
The darkness and the pain you told, the jackboots on the stairs,
Beat out the stamp of wars of old, despite the tears and prayers.

You heard the cries of Amsterdam, the wind off the ziderzee, 
The footsteps in the attic, where young Ann Frank was free
To write the hopes, the wishes, that soon were dashed and lost
Like the millions who they took away and on the heaps were tossed.

O Johnny, in your story, we learned of that great loss
A young girl in the prime of youth —  on the ashe heap tossed
By evil, hate and vengeance, the tools of hateful men:
The thing we thought we’d never see, but now have seen again.
