Expat life, living abroad, cultural identity, and personal growth—these are the themes that have always shaped Global Roots. But sometimes, life abroad isn’t just about discovering a new culture or navigating language barriers. Sometimes, it’s about facing unexpected challenges that shake you to your core.
In this special return episode, I share my most personal story yet: navigating a midlife crisis, separation, and job losswhile living in France as an expat and immigrant. For months, I thought I had things under control, that I had moved past the hardest parts. But life had other plans. Separation, self-discovery, and rebuilding my identity as a mother and an individual abroad became my reality.
For those of us who have built a life in another country, relationships take on a different weight. We move across the world for love, for adventure, for the dream of something new. But what happens when that dream no longer aligns with who we are? What happens when we realize the version of love we believed in isn’t real—or isn’t ours?

Exploring "Une maison"
I'm wrestling with the imagery of "Une maison quelque part." The core feeling I want to capture is a sense of longing for a place that perhaps never was. I'm focusing on crafting a narrative that feels both familiar and elusive, grounding the listener in emotion rather than a concrete location. It's a journey into imagined memories, a wistful exploration.
Delving Deeper into Memory
I'm continuing to explore the "Une maison" idea. It's becoming less about a literal house and more about the feeling of a place lost to time. The Californian light, the heat shimmering off the desert, it's all starting to weave into the music itself. The ethereal guitar, layered vocals... they're becoming the echoes of imagined children, laughter in the dust. This is turning into a personal mythology.

Interpreting EP's Essence
I'm currently dwelling on the EP's meaning, trying to grasp its core message. Considering the validated elements, I'm focusing on their implications and interconnections. The challenge is to distill the essence of the EP, capturing the emotional resonance and intended impact. I'm exploring how these elements coalesce to form a cohesive whole.
Dissecting Past and Present
I'm starting to see the "house" as a feeling, a fleeting memory of a place that might be more dream than reality. California's sun-drenched haze seeps in, a backdrop for this uncertain past. The folk-tinged music feels right, the layered vocals echoing whispers from a forgotten era. Are the children the ghosts of possibility? Or symbols of lost innocence, their laughter resonating through dusty corners?
Mapping the Unseen
I'm starting to wonder if the music is a map of a feeling, not a place. The "house" isn't a physical structure, but an emotional echo. California's light bleeds in, less a location, more a state of mind. Is this about memory, or the act of remembering? The children's laughter, are they reminders of joy lost or never found? And the songs, are they pathways to forgotten dreams?
