Is Sublimation Always Incomplete?

This week Coop and Taylor had the pleasure of hosting Adrian Johnston. Adrian is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. He is the author of many books, including Time Driven: Metapsychology and the Splitting of the Drive; Irrepressible Truth:  On Lacan’s “The Freudian Thing”; and A New German Idealism: Hegel, Žižek, and Dialectical Materialism. This year he has co-published, with Lorenzo Chiesa, God Is Undead: Psychoanalysis for Unbelievers, and has published Infinite Greed: The Inhuman Selfishness of Capital, which is the subject of today’s topic.

Art, just like other social kinds, is often defined in terms of its function, as
people create objects in order to satisfy certain needs. The function of art can
be defined in different ways but is usually expected to provide a rewarding
aesthetic experience.
The requirement for intentionality is so common in the literature that almost all
definitions of art require an artwork to be the product of an intentional action.
definitions of this sort aim to describe not how art is actually thought of, but
how it should be thought of. If we look and see what it is that we call art, we will
also find no common properties, only similarities. Knowing what art is has
nothing to do with being able to define it

I'm a Samsara-born soul, who once left the familiarity of home behind to embrace the unknown.

My journey has always been driven by a desire to observe how things happen in this world, as well as to create, bringing something new into the world — thoughts, pictures, objects, stories. I’ve always had a deep fascination with stories: observing them, listening to them, being a part of them, creating and telling my own.

For the longest time, making music felt like an unreachable dream. It felt like a distant magic world, until recently. Breaking through a wall of fears and self-imposed limitations, I've found my courage, and now I'm no longer afraid.

Music has emerged as the ultimate medium for my storytelling, a way to share emotions, and a means for reflection. It has become a canvas to blend all my sides, talents, passions in one place, and I'm still in awe of the vast landscape of possibilities it presents.

As an artist, I find myself navigating uncharted waters, constantly experimenting and exploring. I don't know where this journey will take me. But we can see together.

Alispe is the sonic project of Álvaro Ortiz de Elguea Lope, also known as M4K1N6L00P5 or Álvaro Mayo, a producer and DJ based in Madrid with roots in Vitoria-Gasteiz. His musical universe dwells between dense textures, unpredictable structures and electronic landscapes filled with tension and beauty.

Moving fluidly between experimental techno, dark ambient and drum & bass, Alispe treats sound as a living material: layers and loops that evolve, erode and reconfigure with each listen. His approach is deeply artisanal, based on meticulous loop manipulation and sound design, building complex and organic sonic architectures.

Founder of the Berlin-based label Bubble of Independence, he promotes an independent and daring vision of electronic music, far from formulas and guided by constant curiosity. He does not follow a timeline or a predefined release plan: his work is a flow in continuous evolution, always seeking new forms of expression.

Alispe is an experience for those who explore electronic music as a language of depth, risk and transformation.
