Some collaborations are emails and stems. Others are shared sunsets, late-night studio stares, and morning walks to the beach with loops still humming in your head. Wilba and Elijah Something’s debut dual EP, Clovelly Concoctions, belongs firmly to the latter. Dreamed up and distilled along the Clovelly coastline at the tail end of 2024, the four-track release arrives on Fraise Records - the wax-first imprint helmed by Wilba and his brother Max - as a celebration of transcontinental friendship, studio chemistry, and that ineffable summertime spark only real connection can conjure.

With one foot in the UK’s bubbling underground and the other in the laidback heat of Australia’s east coast, the pair mix sun-licked deep house textures, techy basslines, and rolling grooves with a touch of tongue-in-cheek flair. From festival-facing openers to the kind of early morning selections that keep dancers guessing, Clovelly Concoctions isn’t just a record - it’s a memory in motion. Think sunrise sets, beachside burners, and grooves that feel as good as they function.

At the heart of the EP is “The Diamond Heist”, the first track the duo completed and a bold statement of intent: cheeky, cinematic, and undeniably clubby. Laced with vocal snippets lifted from heist films and powered by hardware grooves, it’s the kind of cut that turns heads without raising its voice - and we’re proud to premiere it exclusively here on Torture the Artist.

We caught up with Wilba as the EP lands to talk about the Clovelly sessions, coastal rituals, club chaos, and how a lost shoe at a Chase & Status gig might’ve started it all.

Some titles are a shrug. Others are a wink — and “Rap A2” is exactly that: a simple, sly nod that says, this is the A2, this is rap, and this one’s about to hit. It’s the second cut on Toscal Records’ third vinyl outing, TSCL003, and it might just be the hardest hit in the bunch.

Built by Ritacco & Igna, two names already trusted for sleek grooves with teeth, “Rap A2” doesn’t waste time setting up polite small talk - it walks straight onto the floor with a sinus-sharp synth line that slices through the air like neon through fog. The backbone is all tight, punchy Tech-House muscle, every kick landing clean and cold enough to snap a neck back into the groove.

And then there’s that vocal - clipped, cocky, perfectly timed: “when I hit” - half threat, half promise. It’s the line that loops in your head three tracks later, even when the dancefloor’s already spun on to the next moment. No filler bars, no fake hype - just a single line nailed to a rolling, no-frills stomp.

It’s a simple formula, but that’s the trick: the more you strip it back, the more every element has to work twice as hard. “Rap A2” does exactly that - a stomper that slices, swings, and leaves enough space for the crowd to shout the line back when the floor is peaking.

Toscal’s third vinyl statement says it loud enough: lean cuts, sharp edges, and grooves that do exactly what they promise. “Rap A2” is proof that sometimes the best punchline is right there in the name - and yes, it hits.

Loz Goddard trades in his familiar sample-heavy palette for rawer, machine-driven club gear on “Prism Riot”, his debut on Baldo’s Physical Education and the label’s 23rd outing. Four tracks deep, the EP is built on analog weight and dancefloor focus, with subtle nods to the retro shimmer of 90s and early 2000s video games - a playful yet functional collection for selectors who crave groove with personality.

The B1 cut, “Snadestation”, is arguably the cheekiest of the bunch. Its wobbly synth line runs like a mischievous thread through the arrangement, turning what could be a straightforward prog tool into something far more characterful. The bassline pushes steadily forward, the groove keeps its momentum tight, but it’s that elastic synth, teetering between hypnotic and cartoonish, that makes the track stick in the brain. It’s the kind of playful earworm you drop mid-set to raise eyebrows, smiles, and feet all at once - a reminder that floor-fillers don’t need to sacrifice personality for function.

With “Prism Riot”, Loz Goddard proves he can balance analog grit with digital charm, delivering a record that looks forward without forgetting the joy of play. “Snadestation” is a prime example: fun, funky, and sharp enough to keep dancers locked in the loop.

Papolious Jones - aka Brian Topham - makes his debut on Mari.te’s ever-eclectic tresydos with the release "Answers", a four-tracker that blurs the lines between nostalgia and the now. Across the EP, the Barcelona-based artist sculpts grooves that feel like they’ve been unearthed from a 90s afterhours tape, yet carry a polish and focus that’s distinctly contemporary.

The title track, "Answers", sets the tone: a tightly wound number where elegant synth lines curl into a hypnotic loop, equal parts party-minded and introspective. An acid line bubbles beneath the surface, not snarling but slyly guiding the pulse, while retro flecks creep in like afterimages from old Electro records. Still, this isn’t pastiche - the track maintains a sound very much its own, balancing strut and subtlety, memory and immediacy. It’s the kind of cut that convinces bodies onto the floor without needing to raise its voice, inviting dancers to sink into its understated but undeniable pull.

Papolious Jones makes his statement with restraint: "Answers" doesn’t scream, it suggests. And in that suggestion lies the magic - a groove both retro-tinged and refreshingly current, impossible to pin down and even harder to resist.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.

We are some electronic crazy people who one day 4 years ago came together to bring new musical proposals to the local scene of Barcelona and to you, wherever you are.
