Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasizes that thinking of the past can cause depressive states and thinking of the future can cause anxieties. To be aware in the present moment is the ideal state to be in, since it is our current actions that will impact the future

Regardless how high of a status you have, you will have to still go through the dukh often caused by karma. Accept with patience that whatever has happened has happened. Rather than blaming or questioning why me. Rather than focusing on the anxieties of the future, use the current breaths to redirect the current karma. Draupadi and the paandavs have gone into hiding and renamed themselves according to the karma of their circumstances. Her husband (Bheem) goes to address the situation of his wife's harassment with the lust-intoxicated Raja Kreechak. Guru Ji tells us these stories so that we can reflect on how the ways and experiences of these individuals can relate to our lives.

#310 Bheem Steps Up to Protect Draupadi | Sri Nanak Prakash Katha | Bhai Harman Singh

Bhai Bala and Kisna 
The two Sikhs were great scholars of Sanskrit once came to the sanctuary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. They prostrated before Guru Sahib and said “Guru Ji, your Sikhs have the virtues that have been mentioned in the Vedas, Puranas etc. We do Katha of all those Granths and those who listen attain peace but we ourselves as narrators don’t feel the same peace. On the other hand, all your Sikhs have those virtues enshrined within them. How is that so? Please enlighten us Satguru Ji.” Guru Sahib replied, “it is from the mind we get knowledge and understand the discretion of merit and demerit. When you first started learning, you both did it with the intention to make it a method of earning wealth. With this wish, you learned a lot. You did not do it to improve your own life. Know that Waheguru lives within your heart and know that he is watching everything. Bring in virtues and practice them. This way, the name of Waheguru will echo within your hearts.”

Bhai Samunda
A Sikh named Bhai Samunda Ji visited Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. He said “Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, please explain to me the characteristics of a Sanmukh and Bemukh”
Guru Ji replied, “imagine there is an employer who instructs his employee. The employee who follows instructions and completes a task is Sanmukh. On the other hand, if the employee does not complete his task and decides to hide from the employer to not face him, he is a Bemukh. Similarly a Sikh who wakes up in during amritvela and then later I the day engages in his daily routine, joins satsangat and gives dasvand. He is a Sanmukh.” Bhai Samunda Ji with folded hands said “Have mercy on me Satguru Ji, make me such a Sikh.” Bhai Samunda Ji then accepted Guru Ji’s Hukam and lived his life as a Sanmukh Gursikh. 

Bhai Kula, Bhula & Bhagirath
Bhai Kula, Bhula (Jhanju) and Bhai Bhagirath (Sueni) came to Guru Ji and said “Satguru, we are very sad. We’ve realised that we have passed through many lives and now have finally attained a human form. When one dies, he or she has to go through immense pain. Please enlighten us on how we can be Gurmukhs.”
Guru sahib said, “There are 3 types of Gurmukhs - Gurmukh, Gurmukhtar and Gurmukhtam. 
Gurmukh - one who shows his back to all demerits and vices. He only keeps his face towards the Guru. If anyone does them a favour, they will always remember and appreciate the person. They never forget those who help them and always wish to do good to others. 
Gurmukhtar - they wish to leave bad deeds. If they are able to do good, they do it with everything they have. If anyone wishes ill for them, they instead wish well for those people. They eradicate all evil thinking. Their nature is to do good. 
Gurmukhtam - he is engrossed in the knowledge of the real self. They have recognised the world to be false and Waheguru to be the only truth. They see one Waheguru in every being. 
Similarly there are 3 types of manmukhs as well;
Manmukh - if one helps them, they forget all favours and instead wish ill for the one who helps them. They only listen to their own mind and not the Guru. They do not practice Dharam and slander those who practice the way of the Guru. They cheat, are scoundrels and are eaten within by the vice of lust. 
Manmukhtar - seeing someone succeed, it makes them sad. They then slander those people to bring them down - this includes their own family. Burning within, they attract diseases and sickness. Their response to any act is always negative. They find happiness in the fall of others. 
Manmukhtam - wish ill for others while hoping the best for himself. Any Katha does not make a difference to them as they are drowning in ego. They do not give any donations or practice naam daan ishnan. They believe strongly that they can never do good - their happiness and peace lies in doing bad. Such people do straight into hell where they are tortured in various ways. 

Listening to this, the 3 Sikhs brought in the virtues of a Gurmukh into their lives

Gurpertap Suraj Granth Ras 3 Chapter 53

Bhai Lalu, Balu and Har Das 
The 3 Sikhs came to the sanctuary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. They pleaded “Guru Ji please give us your sermons through which we can be one of your Sikhs and we can be liberated.” Guru Ji replied “eradicate pride, attachment and jealousy from your mind. Do not wish ill for anyone. In this manner, nothing will harm you. Always live among Gursikhs with love, speak well and be humble. Share what you have with others and earn an honest living.” The Sikhs practiced this for their whole lives and their sorrows were eradicated. 

Bhai Dhir, Nihalu, Tulsiya and Bula 
The 4 Sikhs came to the Darbar of Guru Sahib where the praise of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was being sung. A thought came to their mind, “every person has some argument/fight going on” and with this thought pleaded to Guru Ji. “There are a lot of people fighting without any knowledge and because of this anyone stuck in this environment would be affected. How do we save ourselves from this? Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji came to this world and a lot of Avtars and prophets also came. They all gave sermons and advices to people but there is too much of information that we are unable to digest...” 
Guru Ji replied, “Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is Waheguru himself who is described as endless by the Vedas. The world has been searching for God but have not found Guru Nanak Dev Ji - even the sons of Brahma have failed to find the limit to God...”
The Sikhs practiced this way of life based on Gurbani and were thus liberated. 

Bhai Tota, Madhu, Gokhu and Toda (Mehta)
The 4 Sikhs came to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. With folded hands, they pleaded “Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, please liberate us from the cycle of birth and death.” Guru Ji replied, “Read and Recite Gurbani. Have discussions about Gurbani among each other to understand what the Guru is saying. Eradicate vices within yourselves and attain virtues instead.” The Sikhs asked, “To read Gurbani and contemplate Gurbani - what is the fruit attained from these acts? Please enlighten us.”
Guru sahib said, “whoever recites Gurbani, all his biggest sins are perished and Antehkaran is purified. One who recited Gurbani with love daily, memorises Gurbani, concentrated on Gurbani - he attains endless happiness. One who reads Gurbani and lets others listen, all his wishes come true. One who selflessly reads Gurbani, his mind becomes pure. He who always contemplates Gurbani selflessly and only wishes for liberation, he attains knowledge. Just like how wood is rubbed against each other to produce fire and at the end the wood becomes ash only leaving the fire behind, if someone contemplates Gurbani, all vices are burned away and only the name of Waheguru is left. Those Sikhs attain Atam Gian.”
All four Sikhs started practicing the Hukam of Satguru Ji and were liberated. 

Bhai Jhaanj, Mukanda and Kedara
The 3 Sikhs visited Guru Ji and asked for Updesh. Guru Ji said “Sing Gurbani in Raagas and as you feel bliss while singing Gurbani, you will attain peace. In Kaljug, Kirtan is at the highest position even higher than the toughest penance. There is nothing equal to Kirtan. Therefore, do Kirtan and get liberated while liberating yourselves.” 
The asked, “Satguru Ji, you have uttered the praise of Kirtan but what is the fruit of Reciting Gurbani and performing Katha?” 
Guru Ji replied, “Reciting Gurbani is like someone who builds a well in his farm and waters his farm using the well. His farm flourishes and provided food for his house. Now to read Gurbani and let others listen, it is as though your farm has overflowed with water and also waters the neighbouring farms. 
To perform Kirtan is like rain from the clouds that waters all farms equally without any limitations or restrictions. All farms are watered. 
To perform Katha is like drizzle which continued throughout the day. Although in lesser volume but it continues watering and the watch absorbs every drop of water.

Gurpertap Suraj Granth Ras 3 Chapter 54

Guru Sahib Ji continues explaining the story of Draupadi, after the murder of Raja Kreechak, to teach us that we aren't the only ones who are feeling sad and painful. Angry and wanting to seek revenge, Kreechak's 100 brothers try to kill Draupadi. Guru Sahib Ji teaches us based on karma and the cycle of trying to seek revenge, we ensure many things. It's best to focus on Vaheguru.
