Little Herbert ( don't call me Herbert )  and Cheektowaga Records: Pioneering Diversity in NYC's Rock Scene
Cheektowaga Records stands as a testament to visionary entrepreneurship in the music industry. Founded in 1979 by Herbert "Little Herbert" Vincent Reid Jr., this independent rock label emerged from the vibrant heart of New York City's East Village, defying racial and genre conventions to create a platform for marginalized voices. Little Herbert, a Black American musician and visionary, channeled his life experiences into building a label that would challenge the status quo and leave an indelible mark on the NYC rock scene .

The Genesis of Cheektowaga Records
Historical Context and Foundation
Cheektowaga Records began as Snap Records in 1979 before evolving into its final incarnation. Named after the Seneca word for "Land of the Crab-apples," the label reflected Vince's deep roots in upstate New York while embracing the rebellious spirit of downtown NYC's punk and rock scene. At a time when racial barriers in the music industry were significant, Vince pioneered a space focused on independent rock and college rock, rather than conforming to expectations for Black-owned labels to specialize in soul, R&B, or hip-hop .

Entrepreneurial Vision
Herbert's entrepreneurial journey was fueled by his rejection of societal limitations. Despite warnings that his Black identity would hinder his success, he pursued his vision with unwavering determination. His approach combined non-traditional elements with seasoned musicianship, creating a signature sound that blurred genre boundaries .

Key Artists and Contributions
Cheektowaga Records featured a diverse roster of artists, including:

Box 7: One of the first bands signed to the label, representing Brooklyn's rock scene.

Next Generation: A North Carolina-based group contributing to the label's eclectic mix.

Zane Campbell: A flagship artist whose Appalachian roots blended with electric guitar-driven sound.

Xica Jool (also known as Nacha Mendez or Marghereta Cordero): A flamboyant Spanish-American singer who added club-friendly dance music to the label's primarily rock-oriented catalog .

Herbert's path was marked by adversity, including homelessness, racial discrimination, and legal troubles. Yet, these experiences informed the label's ethos and Vince's lyricism, which often explored themes of resilience and identity. C@ In The H@ (pronounced: Cat in the Hat), DJ & Producer who creates a fusion of early twentieth century swing and jazz, and chunky twenty-first century beats with bouncy electronic bass.  

Hailing from Birmingham UK with an innovative style called "Swing with the Big Bass Sound", his DJ sets are about mashing it up and having fun, bringing you Electro Swing & Vintage Remix with aspects of Turntablism, DnB, House, Hip Hop, Dubstep & whatever else fits into the melting pot.  

He is also Director at Ragtime Records alongside Tom ESC (Electric Swing Circus) & Duke Skellington (Vaude Villainz).  His releases have seen him getting a number of Spotify editorial playlistings (including a no.1 spot), tracks in the top 10 on Beatport, and his remix of 'Swingin' Together' has been featured on no less than 3 best of Electro Swing compilations. As well as producing music for Ragtime Records, he has also had releases on Freshly Squeezed, Pedigree Cuts, Breakbeat Paradise Recordings, Ton Liebt Klang, & Greenqueen Music.   

Since 2012, his music has secured him gigs at the most exciting UK Festivals including Boomtown, Shambala, Secret Garden Party & Glastonbury; as well as seeing him playing gigs all across Europe, and further afield including UAE & Thailand.
