The nostalgia is strong with me this month, it seems, as once again we're gonna go back...back in time.  This time to the 70s.  And the 80s.  And the 90s.  And the 00s.  

This latest Interbay track is pure 70s disco, with horns, flutes, and a beat that never ends.  
This latest Interbay track is pure 80s new wave dance, with digital and analog synths.
This latest Interbay track is pure 90s house music, with minimal vocals and that four on the floor.
This latest Interbay track is pure 00s filter funk, with...ummm...filters.  And funk.  

...all of that gets tossed into the infamous blender, here at Phantom Laboratories West, and once again the puree button is pushed...and just over five minutes later, VOILA!  

More Interbay.  (Just what everybody wants, right?)  

I can draw a straight line between all of these genres, because this is all what I grew up with, what I danced to, what I dj'd (and made others dance to).  Too many people (in the US, at least) think that disco died with the Disco Demolition at Comiskey Park, but it never has--it just went underground, changed names, blended itself into other trends, and kept reappearing to influence the next generation who just want some music that is good to dance to...  

I think this Interbay track WOULD be good to dance to, even though it is a Frankentstein monster of all of those different (but related) and separated in time, elements.  It all seems very natural to me to put all of this stuff into a musical "failure pie in a sadness bowl."  (Thanks, Patton!)  

There are elements of this track I think that suggest that it might be an extended discomix (where's Tom Moulton when you need him?) or maybe even a dub mix, found on the flipside of the 12" single, for adventurous dj's to mess around with.  

...of course, that suggests that there's an "original" version of this song, meant for radio (which is the only place where disco truly died--American radio.)  

There isn't.  (And that shouldn't surprise you at all, if you've been following Interbay at all...)

Modula's eighth release, “Steel Nomad,” presents FISBO & Mentalitet's mastery of industrial-tinged electronica through two meticulously crafted originals. The producers construct immersive worlds where grinding basslines intersect with crystalline harmonics, creating tension between mechanical precision and organic flow. The themes evolve with architectural care, their acidic undercurrents morphing across cavernous mixes that reward both focused listening and uninhibited movement. The addition of reworks by Cosmosolar and Cali Burton introduces contrasting interpretations that complement the EP's core vision without diverting from its cohesive aesthetic. Each composition demonstrates a keen understanding of physical space in electronic music, with frequencies carefully positioned to manipulate perception and energy.

Premiered here, the Moroder-esque "Another Engine" distinguishes itself through elegant restraint, its motorik pulse recalling vintage arpeggiators while maintaining contemporary polish. The arrangement breathes deliberately, allowing rubbery low-end frequencies to converse with shimmering upper registers in a call-and-response that feels almost conversational. Its genius lies in what's withheld – the track teases climactic releases but prioritizes sustained momentum, creating addictive tension on the dance floor. This measured approach highlights the producers' confidence in their material, trusting subtle modulations and textural shifts to maintain interest.

Today, I'm thrilled to present a piece of music with a truly unique history. This track is a reimagined version of a short theme from a 1980s Czechoslovakian sci-fi series.

The original piece was only 1 minute and 23 seconds long, but through a meticulous and artistic editing process, and by incorporating new analog synthesizers, I've been able to expand it into a 3-and-a-half-minute epic.

What you're about to hear is a blend of retrowave and slow disco with a touch of classical melody—a journey that captures the spirit of the past while pushing forward into a new soundscape.

I hope you enjoy this expanded vision of a forgotten gem.

Biography:

Ilya Santana is a name that echoes through the shimmering corridors of electronic music, particularly in the realms of space disco and cosmic funk. Born and raised in the Canary Islands, a place where the Atlantic meets the dust of Africa, Santana found himself drawn to the edges of sound early on—edges where melody could float, and rhythm didn’t have to march. He came up through the analog warmth of the ‘70s and the cold seduction of the ‘80s, and somehow fused both into his own kind of future nostalgia.

His career took root in the early 2000s, not through grand gestures but through consistency—a steady stream of releases that wound their way through labels like Balearic stalwarts Eskimo Recordings and Nang. Each track, a kind of ode to neon dreams and late-night drives, became a testament to Santana’s gift for atmosphere: his music doesn’t just play, it inhabits. There’s a cinematic quality to his work, like he’s scoring the movie of a life that’s never quite real but always feels familiar.

Ilya’s sound is less about chart-topping bravado and more about evocation. It lingers. It hums beneath the surface of memory. Through remix work, original compositions, and DJ sets that feel like journeys, Santana has shaped a career that’s both low-key and influential—an underground luminary lighting the way for those who understand that some of the best music doesn’t demand attention, it earns it.

Ilya is running his own record label "Astrolead recordings" specialized on the most underground side of Disco, Space/Cosmic disco, Retro and Synthwave.
