 “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” (FACTORY – Mark I, Live @ Falò, giugno 2017)

In una calda e magica serata di giugno del 2017, sulle rive di Porto Torres, i FACTORY – Mark I – regalano una versione intensa e profondamente vissuta di “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, immortale ballata firmata da The Band. Ma qui la dolente malinconia dell’originale si trasforma in una carica rock vibrante e muscolare, che riporta il pezzo a nuove latitudini emotive.
Silvio Vinci apre la strada con il suo pianoforte deciso e strutturale, costruendo l’impalcatura ritmica e melodica su cui poggia l’intera esecuzione. Il suono è caldo, tondo, eppure energico, capace di trasportare l’ascoltatore tra le polverose strade del Sud americano con uno spirito tutto mediterraneo.
Davide Spanu irrompe con le sue chitarre ruvide, rinforzando i ritornelli e donando al pezzo un’impronta quasi Springsteeniana, mentre la sezione ritmica – Chris Pain al basso e Luca Monaco alla batteria – è rocciosa, quadrata, in perfetta sincronia, come un motore a combustione lenta ma inarrestabile.
Al centro della scena, Fabrizio Cherubini dà voce al dolore, alla rabbia e alla dignità ferita della Dixie con un piglio aggressivo e sentito, come se ogni parola fosse un macigno da scolpire nel fuoco della memoria. La sua voce graffia, vibra, si spezza e poi si rialza, restituendo al brano una nuova vita, viscerale e potente.
Quella sera al Falò, i FACTORY non hanno semplicemente suonato una cover: hanno reso omaggio alla storia, trasformandola in un grido moderno, pieno di orgoglio e passione. Un’esibizione che ancora oggi riecheggia tra le onde del Golfo dell’Asinara.

“The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down – Live @ Bistrot 2019” – FACTORY

In una delle serate più evocative del Bistrot sassarese, i Factory hanno reso omaggio a uno dei brani più intensi e simbolici del repertorio americano: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, dei The Band. La loro interpretazione non è una semplice cover, ma una rilettura viscerale, densa di pathos e memoria, che si muove tra spiritualità collettiva e malinconia storica.
Fabrizio Cherubini, alla voce, scava nella parte narrativa del brano, con un’intonazione sospesa tra racconto e preghiera. Le sue inflessioni ruvide ma sincere danno nuova vita alla figura di Virgil Caine, rendendola universale e contemporanea.
Giorgio Sale, alla chitarra, guida l’impianto armonico con tocco essenziale ma vibrante, accentuando i momenti emotivi con delicate pennellate elettriche. Niente virtuosismi, solo anima e servizio alla canzone.
Silvio Vinci, questa volta al solo pianoforte, costruisce un’architettura sonora solida e commovente, intrecciando accordi larghi e arpeggi trasparenti in perfetto stile Richard Manuel . La sua esecuzione è il cuore ritmico e lirico dell’intero brano.
Chris Pain al basso e Luca Monaco alla batteria completano la tessitura con una sezione ritmica che pulsa con discrezione, lasciando spazio ma dando profondità alla dinamica della performance.
Il risultato è una versione toccante, sobria e potente, che rispetta la sacralità dell’originale e la fa risuonare in uno spazio intimo e caldo, come solo il Bistrot sa offrire. Un omaggio sincero, suonato con il cuore e ascoltato in religioso silenzio.

THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN Live @Bistrot -2019-remaster

The Weight (Studio Session Mar. 2025) – FACTORY (Mark III)

Registrata in sala prove a marzo 2025, questa versione di The Weight dei FACTORY (Mark III) è un omaggio potente e rispettoso, ma al tempo stesso reinterpretato con una personalità ben marcata. Alla voce solista e chitarra acustica c’è Antonio Miscali, che conduce il brano con un timbro caldo, narrativo, a tratti dolente, perfetto per restituire la tensione e la malinconia che permeano l’originale.
Sergio Virdis lavora di cesello sulla chitarra elettrica, scegliendo timbri sobri ma incisivi, con un tocco che ricorda il periodo più maturo e “roots rock” della Band, ma che ammicca anche al fraseggio liquido di Mike Bloomfield. Il suo dialogo con l’Hammond è uno dei punti forti della traccia.
Silvio Vinci alterna con grande gusto piano e organo Hammond, donando al brano un respiro gospel e soul, in perfetta linea con lo stile di Al Kooper: i suoi interventi non sono mai invadenti, ma sempre determinanti, capaci di colorare ogni passaggio con profondità emotiva.
La sezione ritmica di Chris Pain e Luca Monaco è compatta, calda, dal groove dondolante. Il basso di Chris, rotondo e melodico, tiene insieme i passaggi più dinamici, mentre Luca alla batteria regala un beat rilassato ma deciso, in pieno spirito americana, tra laid-back e driving pulse.

Il risultato finale è una versione di The Weight che mantiene l’anima del brano originale ma si sposta verso territori sonori che richiamano le collaborazioni tra Kooper e Bloomfield e il rock elegante e riflessivo della Band nella seconda metà degli anni ’70. Una ballata epica, sospesa, profondamente umana.

Il “Mark IV” dei Factory riparte da The Weight e lo fa nel modo più naturale possibile: chiudendosi in sala prove, alzando i volumi e trattando un classico come se fosse un pezzo nuovo. La novità più evidente è il ritorno alla chitarra di Davide Spanu, che riporta nel suono della band quel misto di gusto southern e ruvidità rock che è sempre stato nel DNA dei Factory. Al suo fianco, l’ingresso di Claudio Sanna alla batteria porta un drumming solido, rotondo, molto “americano”: meno fronzoli, più groove, con un feel che richiama apertamente il mondo di Woodstock e del country-rock anni ’70.
Silvio Vinci tiene insieme tutto dalla sua postazione, alternando piano e organo: un’intro d’organo che apre il brano come un sipario di velluto e un solo centrale che firma il pezzo con il suo classico tocco soulful. Chris Pain al basso costruisce fondamenta elastiche e melodiche, sempre al servizio del brano, mentre Antonio Miscali alla voce solista e alla chitarra acustica porta la dimensione narrativa: il timbro caldo, leggermente graffiato, si appoggia perfettamente sul tappeto sonoro della band, con la chitarra acustica che dona quella patina roots indispensabile.
Queste sessioni di prove non suonano come un semplice “ripasso di repertorio”, ma come una vera ripartenza: i Factory Mark IV sembrano ritrovare se stessi tornando a uno dei loro cavalli di battaglia, ma con la maturità di una band che ha storia sulle spalle e ancora voglia di rimettersi in gioco. The Weight diventa così il manifesto di una nuova fase: stessa anima, ma energia rinnovata.

“One road is ending, another road begins, come on let’s do it over again” - A Different Thread

Some things are just meant to be. Alicia Best (US) and Robert Jackson (UK) met while busking on the cobbled streets of Ireland and discovered both a musical and personal harmony that was serendipitous. In the decade since forming A Different Thread, Best and Jackson have taken their act on the road, touring over a dozen countries, supporting artists such as The Milk Carton Kids and Jody Stephens (Big Star), and garnering critical praise from the likes of Folk Radio UK, which hailed the duo as “warm, deep songwriters that have drank from the well of 20th century tradition.”

Their new album, Over Again (out Sep 2nd 25’), was written during a period of transition, marked by their arrival stateside and a solar eclipse. Recording began in their tiny home studio, continued in Sylvan Esso's Betty's (The Mountain Goats, Watchhouse), and finished at Alma Vale Studio (Phantom Limb/Yola, Elles Bailey) in the UK. 

Their sound is transcontinental, blending Jackson's British folk rock background with Best's North Carolina-bred alt-country melodies. Informed by their life experiences (navigating visas, vanlife, love across oceans) and liberal commentary on both environmental and social justice topics, the album mixes electric guitars with Appalachian dulcimer, gospel-tinged vocals with honky-tonk fiddle. While inspired by artists like Gillian Welch, The Avett Brothers, and John Prine, A Different Thread maintain a distinct sound that is all their own. 

Alicia and Robert see the creation of Over Again as a testament to the power that music has to heal and transform: “For us, this album marks a new beginning—like a rebirth—as we shed negative cycles to work towards a brighter future.”

Alex Summerlin is an eclectic alternative and folk-rock musician who has played music professionally for over a decade around the Little Rock, AR, and Nashville, TN areas. Originally hailing from Bryant, AR, Alex was drawn to music at a young age by the generations of working musicians in his family.  He started playing cover music in local bars and clubs as young as 12 years old, playing music steadily throughout his teens and twenties.

Alex started writing music in college as a passion project to break out of the limitations he felt playing cover songs. There, he met fellow long-time musicians and collaborators Rick Scott and Chad Terrell, and they joined Alex to write and produce songs from their home studio in Maumelle, AR (WaterWoods Studio). 

Since then, Alex, Chad, and Rick have continued writing and producing songs that reflect influences from several genres and three generations of music they wish to share with anyone who will listen.
