Mussorgsky based his musical material on drawings and watercolours by Hartmann produced mostly during the artist's travels abroad. Locales include Italy, France, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. Today most of the pictures from the Hartmann exhibition are lost, making it impossible to be sure in many cases which Hartmann works Mussorgsky had in mind.

I've always loved this tiny segment of Mussorgsky's "Great Gate of Kiev," whether in the orchestral version or performed by Emerson Lake and Palmer, or Isao Tomita.

Here's me playing with some synths and samples to bring out the exquisite harmonies.

Irrlicht, song 9 from Winterreise by Franz Schubert.  The false light of the will-o'-the-wisp has led him astray, but he is used to that. Every path leads to the same goal. Our joys and sorrows are but a trick of the light. Every stream reaches the sea, every sorrow its grave.

3 tracks, my 9 meter grand mixed with a fender rhodes and a special synth using a variety of delays to achieve space. Preliminary mix, not yet EQed. x`

Irrlicht - Will-o'-the-wisp

Raw score outputs for Plantasia, a soon-to-be released short film from the brilliant mind of Director Jessica Guerra. The sound is warped, weird, and stunted to follow the strange path of realization pursued by the protagonist. Dissonance and traveling tempos as metaphor. Groove to suit the era. Patchwork arrangements to carry the visual composition. 

This project held seventeen layers of meaning for me. The film was inspired by Mort Garson's 1976 classic, Mother Earth's Plantasia. My record collection reeks of warped issues from Tomita, Gershon Kingsley, and Jean-Michel Jarre. Early in my career, I studied synth composition with Don Preston (Apocalypse Now, Zappa) and have carried his wisdom into digital experimentation. To put it simply, this project was a dream come true.

This score is mostly led by the Moog Mavis running through some eurorack filters. The Soma Pulsar-23 is all over the place with hidden grooves, drones, tones, and touches. Sampling Pulsar-23 drum partials into the SP-404 gave groove elements that extra chop. Finally, the entirely digital ASM Hydrasynth did all the heavy lifting because it's a dream synth for sound design.
