52. Mother's Musical Diaries - Just Another Andy Tuesday

Dawn and I climbed a hill to get away from the passersby along the lake but also discovered a gorgeous vista of the MacRitchie reservoir. The reservoir was shimmering in the afternoon sun as a crew team were doing their final laps of the day. Our location had a wonderful sense of space. On the edge of a forest with tall tree canopy that hid a few small birds. The constant buzzing of the bugs and the swashing of a distant highway can be heard in the tracks. Calm in its present state.

This session began with the ting of tuning forks before playing the crystal bowls. She strikes two bowls at the same time to create different harmonies. She held the gong and twisted it left and right to play with the stereo field before ending with the crystal bowls. I noticed that she only struck the bowls which made for a very percussive, rhythmic session.

Sound Bath Sessions 134: Dawn Phua

I had the pleasure of recording Noel a few weeks ago at Char yoga in Kwai Hing. She was interested in sound baths as a way to help with her stress at work and signed up for singing bowl lessons. After completing her course, she volunteered for giving a sound bath for Cancer Warriors at Char Yoga, a yoga center that caters to cancer survivors by promoting a balanced and healthier life for all individuals, especially in the mind and soul. Char yoga offers yoga, sound baths, and handicraft workshops in their studio. After giving her first session, she was invited to continue to offer sound baths in the studio for their clients.

Though she is quite new, her style is quite mature and restrained. Her slow and gentle touch is easy to connect with. Placing the microphone a distance away on a stand put equal emphasis on the constant highway traffic and the bowls giving the recording a feeling of spaciousness and an immersive sense of place. This track is the second recording we did that night.

Sound Bath Sessions 107: Noel Chan

I recorded Brian at East Coast Park near where he has lived his whole life. It is great to record in spaces that have deep meaning to the practitioner as you can hear their connection with the place in how they play. The sounds are more relaxed and familiar as they tell you their story with sound.

Brian came on his bicycle with his metal bowls the next afternoon. We set up this recording in a sheltered area at Raintree Cove. The ECP swishing behind him contrasted with his very still and calm session.

My final session with Nicky was a few days after I got back from Singapore. Still buzzing on the amazing experience, it was good to be back home and even better to record Nicky again. I really enjoy listening to her sessions and her style is very comforting and gentle. 

This is our second recording we did that day. She wanted to record one more track with singing bowls to my delight. I was treated to one more wonderful calming session of her singing bowls. My recordings with her have been very memorable and I hope to be able to record her again soon.
