Forty-eight years ago, Kentucky saw one of its worst tragedies, the burning of the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, outside of Cincinnati. 

While the club, also known as the “Showplace of the Nation,” opened in the 1970s, the space has been a part of the entertainment scene of Northern Kentucky since the 1930s. The venue allowed Kentuckians to attend performances by nationally known artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Louis Armstrong, among others, in their home state.

Tragically, the club caught fire on the night of May 28, 1977, which resulted in the death of 165 people. While the club was never rebuilt, the event caused changes in the way hospitals designed their disaster plans and paved the way for federal and state changes in fire codes and safety.
