Our role is not to take over the bureaucracies but to bring a class-conscious understanding and programme to rank-and-file militants. The best example of genuine solidarity delivered by the organised British working class is that of the ‘Hands Off Russia’ campaign, which frightened the TUC into threatening a general strike and the ruling class into abandoning its attempt to send more arms and soldiers to the ongoing war of intervention against Soviet Russia. Not only did the workers win their point regarding the war, they also scared the government into making unemployment and pension concessions. This was the closest that British workers have yet come to making a socialist revolution, complete with organising committees up and down the country and militant communist leadership.

Further proof that the gang in charge of the official organisations of working-class resistance have been completely bought off. The wretched stance of the trade union movement in relation to the war in Ukraine, which has been characterised by abject support for British imperialism up to and including vocal support for open Nazis, exposes once again the truth of Josef Stalin’s description of social democracy as ‘the moderate wing of fascism’. Today, as the imperialists seek to convince working people that they should be backing the continuation of Nato’s war and the provision of ever more arms and money to its fascist proxies, TUC leaders are not only not opposing this drive to war but are actually demanding it go further and faster.

First Group’s profits vanish without drivers – the exploiters can’t do without workers, but the workers could do fine without an exploiting class! First Group’s operating profits reached £204.3m in 2024, and shareholder dividends increased by 45 percent. These profits, created by milking drivers and passengers alike, weren’t invested in new buses or better wages. They were pocketed by parasitic shareholders who have zero accountability to the hundreds of thousands of workers relying on functional public transport.
