Carlton Williams, who directs the Cornell University Law School's Movement Lawyering Clinic, talks about the importance of defending human rights defenders. The clinic took on the case of Ashley Spring, who witnessed an arrest made by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officers in Worcester, MA. During this encounter, which has become known as the "Eureka Street Incident, she tried to help people being detained.
In this day and age of government overreach it is even more important to monitor the government's activities, including those of ICE, which often violate the law.

Meera Viruru and Jim McDonald, who are members of the Amnesty International local group in Chicago, talk about two recent human rights reports on the garment industry in South Asia. In this trillion dollar industry, more than 100 million people are employed, and 40% of manufacturing jobs in South Asia are in the garment industry. Many of the factories are in Free Trade Zones, also known as Special Economic Zones, or Export Processing Zones, that make it easy to circumvent domestic labor laws and protections. Jerome Wright and Beth Harris discuss the human rights crisis in New York State's prison system and the efforts to change the narrative and bring about substantial and systemic change. Jerome speaks from experience of being a returning citizen after 30 years incarcerated in NYS prisons and working as an advocate in many organizations.
Since the torture and murder of Robert Brooks by prison guards at the Marcy prison in September 2024 and the statewide wildcat strike of prison guards in February 2025, the situation in New York's prisons has deteriorated further under the supervision of Daniel Martuscello, the Commissioner of DOCCS (Department of Corrections and Community Supervision).  Jerome and Beth urge our community to participate in A Day of Action against Mass Incarceration planned for March 16 in Albany to demand executive and legislative action to end the longstanding and acute crisis of brutality, torture, and death in NYS prisons, including by expanding pathways home from incarceration and transforming the environment inside. There will be a rally, press conference, and meetings with lawmakers. It is possible to catch a bus from Syracuse or form car pools from Ithaca. Elise Auerbach, who is the Iran Country Specialist at Amnesty International USA, talks about the human rights situation in the country historically and at present. Elise has received an award for her refugee case work at the recent Annual General Meeting of AIUSA. Over the last few decades, she has reviewed more than 200 cases, providing declarations of support and testimonies in immigration court proceedings. She discusses the various reasons the Iranian government uses to target, convict, imprison, and execute people in Iran, and encourages people to continue with their activism, for example, the Nowruz actions, which highlight the cases of individuals around Iran's New Year. We also reflect that during the current war, Israel, the United States, and Iran have been violating international human rights law because they have failed to ensure that civilians are protected.

Tom Getman reflects on his recent trip to Egypt, where he engaged in conversations with officials who are in charge of refugees, including those from Palestine. We talk about the ongoing war in Gaza, the violence in the West Bank, and the sale of weapons to Israel that are used against civilians, which is against international law. We also discuss what is going on in the United States with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents patrolling the streets in Minnesota, dragging immigrants from the street and their homes while wearing masks to obscure their identity, and killing two protesters, who were U.S. citizens. In the majority of these cases judges found the detained immigrants to have authorization to be in the country. While Trump has demonized Somalis, the community has rallied around their neighbors, demonstrating that an alternative way that is centered on community solidarity is possible. Lastly, we reflect on the importance of hope and resilience, and supporting each other.
