Adam Chodzko’s 'The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads' (2024) is a science fiction audio walk (via headphones), in and around the rapidly and radically changing environment of Northfleet, Kent; A journey of strange inward and outward transformations.
As its audience moves along a specific route within this landscape the accompanying ‘virtual reality’ soundtrack guides perceptions of newly emerging relationships between place, mind and body through its composition of vocal narration, instructions, music, sound effects, props and performers. Moving backwards and forwards through time 'The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads' suggests that our recent collective experiences has shifted our sense of reality;
We have become more highly tuned! We now perceive our networks of relationships with greater clarity! This is a rare moment ( sadly, it might pass ) that we have been given (as a gift!) to explore. Let’s create this exercise, this meditation, in a unique place. The only place where it can evolve: Here!
As we try to head out into the world again 'The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads' attempts to re-calibrate us for this exploration. Exploring in the collective imaginary a ‘cement-ality’ evolved through shared experiences of the pandemic and channelled through the earth beneath this landscape, The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads attempts to create a utopian garden-city of new consciousness.

An earlier version of the work evolved over the first half of 2021, during the pandemic and Northfleet’s final phase of limbo, until the property developers’ diggers moved in to erase the last traces of its cement industry, mutating the identity of its community.
Each experience of the walk is different as the radical transformations of landscape escalate hour by hour. Many of the narrative’s visual references to features of the site, that existed only a week beforehand, suddenly became buried under piles of rubble, as though the bulldozers are somehow demolishing the audio’s truths, turning them to fiction. The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads is a method of preserving the disappearing within the collective memory of its audience, who become the custodians of the soul of the Northfleet landscape. Through attempting to weave a mythology that reveals the inherent beauty, wonder and mystery of a place – its ‘character’ – rooted in its strange and fluid realities it creates a form of resistance to the massive property development project surrounding it; Ebbsfleet Garden City, new-build ‘communities’ currently sorely devoid of character.
Through attempting to combine multiple empathic attentions into a single guide for very different bodies and minds The Mysterious Return of the Fleet Spring Heads is itself made up of the appearance of a single (female) voice that is constantly changing its place and time:

This is one of my favorite verses of yours. In order to keep your words alive, I placed it on a new beat I made. The verse was recorded in 2011 on a USB mic & had those CD player headphones that hurt the top of our ears. But we made the best with what we had in the basement. I miss you every day bro.

Over time, that love expanded into poetry writing and jazz — especially the kind that swings, speaks, and smirks all at once. Jazz, to me, isn’t just a genre; it’s a personality. A conversation. A little tilt of the head and a grin that knows more than it says.

When I set out to create an album, it’s rarely just a collection of songs. I approach it like a personal playlist — one that drifts and flows as if the entire tracklist were one long, uninterrupted piece. Each track leans into the next, shifting mood, pace, or voice, but always carrying the same thread of feeling. I want you to listen the way I do — not as a shuffle of moments, but as a cinematic arc. One breath that lasts an hour.

Lyrically, my work is rooted in lived experience. Sometimes it’s obvious. Other times it’s just the skeleton of a memory, dressed up in wit, irony, or longing. I draw from real-life events, then let the poet in me twist, stretch, or sweeten them to taste. Depending on the tone of the album — playful, romantic, nostalgic, or something in between — I try to keep the emotional truth intact while giving it a fresh coat of creativity. A little humor where it fits. A deeper dive where it hurts.

My newest jazz album continues this tradition — short-lined swing tracks, conversational duets, and tongue-in-cheek storytelling. It’s an homage to late-night alleyway ballads, rooftop serenades, and train station goodbyes — all bound together with a sense of charm and cohesion. Each song is its own little scene, but together they tell a story — one you can revisit with each replay.
