What happens when one guitar god pays tribute to another… and it backfires?

In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising fallout between Eddie Van Halen and Eric Clapton — two of rock’s most legendary players. It all started with a jam session in 1983, featured on Brian May’s Star Fleet Project, where Eddie and Brian recorded a slow blues track called “Blues Breaker” — dedicated to Clapton himself.

But Clapton hated it.
He called it “horrible.”
He said Eddie and Brian “can’t play” the blues.
And he delivered a scathing verdict:

“If he was that tuned into me and missed that point… then he missed the whole point.”

This video explores the tension between technical brilliance and emotional expression, the strict “rules” of blues as Clapton saw them, and how a friendship built on admiration ended with hurt feelings, harsh words, and never speaking again.

We also revisit Dave Davies of The Kinks and his own complicated feelings about being imitated — including a jab at Eddie Van Halen’s version of “You Really Got Me.”

I don't really remember when I wrote this song.  I do know it's a joining of two older ideas that never seemed to work on their own.  So here it is for you to judge - does this idea work?  It's a melancholy song that's fairly short.  The instrumentation is fairly bare - drums, bass, guitar  and vox.  Hope you like this little ditty.  Thanks for having a listen.   Cheers.

Someone Else's Song (RC Sterling)

One day I was poring through a vintage children's classroom songbook and I came upon "Pipe of Peace," described as a Chippewa (Obijwe) ceremonial peace song. I took the lyrics and adapted it to my own music, inspired by the guitar riffs of The Kinks and The Smithereens, and we played it in my then-band, The Rover Boys. In 2024 I decided to write a collection of songs reflecting on Americana themes not usually presented in the mainstream, and I revived "Pipe of Peace." I added a bridge to include an Obijwe reading of The Lord's Prayer, and the last verse is a selection of Psalms that harmonized with the plea for peace and an end to war and strife. This is not about smoke but about intention, heart, and seeing the sacred surrounding us.

Hi, I’m Dan! Living here in England, I’ve been writing music all my life. My biggest influences are The Beatles, The Kinks and a wide array of 60’s/70’s artists.

Entertainer, songwriter, and “Singer at Large” Johnny J. Blair is known for his brand of “pop music with a twist,” influenced by Americana, British Invasion rock, old school soul/r’n’b, psychedelia, and punk/new wave, with melodicism breathed by classical, gospel, jazz, and world music. 

As a solo acoustic act or when fronting a band, Johnny engages an audience. He was called “a white James Brown” by Brown’s legendary drummer, Clyde Stubblefield. Johnny’s current itinerary includes performing in assisted living homes for people with disabilities and dementia: “Music goes through the brain into places where math and language don’t reach. It heals, and it makes a difference.”

Since the 80s, Johnny has issued full-length recordings to a global audience— from the “new wave concept album” DOOR IN THE WATER, to the soulful masterwork FIRE, to the bare-knuckled acoustic “agitpop” of TREADMARKS, to the “Ziggy Stardust meets PET SOUNDS” of GRATEFUL to the glam-tango tinged masterwork I LIKE THE STREET (with musical support from The Badlees, Eric Biondo/Beyondo, and Mike Garson, David Bowie’s pianist).

Johnny has worked with a range of acts—most prominently with Davy Jones of The Monkees (“I learned valuable stagecraft from David”). Johnny played and worked with Jones for 20 years, and he was the touring bassist/vocalist with The Monkees 45th Anniversary Tour of the UK and USA. Other artists Johnny has played with are John Bechdel (Ministry), David Cassidy, Buddy & Julie Miller, and Al Stewart (“Year of the Cat”). 

For 2019, Johnny on the beat with fresh material and a new album in the works, WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN. He says, “I’ve played the Royal Albert Hall, CBGB’s, Disney, The Fillmore, Las Vegas, Mabuhay Gardens, the Tokyo Billboard, holy temples in India, desert islands, Caribbean cruise ships, churches, prisons, garages, biker bars, and picnics, but I’ll really hit it big when I play for you!”

Over a 40 year span, I have written a countless number of songs, alone or in collaboration with others.  Here, you will find the product of those efforts with many songs recently re-recorded.  Frequently, earlier versions live here as well. All songs were written by me (RC Sterling) unless otherwise noted.  While several singers contribute to what you hear, the most common element across the material is a commitment to crafting catchy pop/rock/alternative tunes. In some instances AI programs have been used to isolate older vocal tracks when the original audio files could not be found.  All tracks have been auto tuned and pitch corrected as needed. Unfortunately, nothing could help those demos that featured my lead vocals. 😁
