"As I was starting this mixtape I was looking for songs giving energy in these crazy and frustrating times and also for songs picking up the rise of spring. At some point I noticed that many songs I chose started with drum breaks so I thought why not make this as an idea for the mix. And yes - nobody can keep up with the unbelievable drumming of "The Shaggs". I hope you enjoy listening."

The self-titled debut album with special guests Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Stooges) and Françoise Cactus of Stereo Total (who sadly passed away in 2021) was recorded in the famous Vielklang Studios in Berlin and released 1995 on Noisolution.

The band are chiefly remembered for 1996's brilliant, surreal, indie-dance cover of Barry White's classic "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" with Dirk von Lowtzow (Tocotronic) and the internationally renowned performer and composer Charles Curtis on cello.
This track stormed college radio, particularly across the US, Japan and Australia.

Anything I need to say about SHARON STONED despite that they split up much too soon?
The experimental lo-fi noise-rock outfit Sharon Stoned formed 1995 by Mark Kowarsch & Christopher Uhe right after the split of their band Speed Niggs. Following their awesome debut album License To Confuse and the Tape EP on Berlin’s City Slang label, Mark and Krite signed to Sony Columbia and release the highly acclaimed double-album Sample & Hold, which took in special guest contributions from the likes of Evan Dando (the band supported The Lemonheads throughout their 1996 Car Button Cloth Europe-tour), Lou Barlow, The Notwist, Tom Liwa, Furtips, Gitbox!, Tuesday Weld, Tocotronic and members of HP Zinker and Die Goldenen Zitronen. After the Down single and the tour retrospective You Very Own EP, the collection All Death All Of The Time 1995-2015 was released 2015 as part of the 74on47-project by Sharon Stoned & Tortuga Bar. All Death All Of The Time 1995-2015 is a bunch of rarities, outtakes, favorite tracks, remixes, compilation and live tracks.

Episode 24 - Ohne Not kein Twist

"Doing Fine" creates a somewhat depressive party mood and tells the story of self-doubt and repression after a broken relationship. Frogcodile settle somewhere between exaggerated optimism and cynicism and at the same time manage the musical balancing act between bedroom producer and jam rock band. The outcome is soundtrack that perfectly suits the upcoming pandemic party summer 2021.

Doing Fine

“Pedestal” kommt daher wie der Soundtrack eines spacigen Tarantino-Westerns. Frogcodile verbinden düster anmutende elektronische Klänge mit der geballten Energie einer wuchtigen Rockband. Thematisch befasst sich der Song mit einer Depression, die aus der Verherrlichung der eigenen Vergangenheit heranwachsen kann.

Pedestal

Mark Kowarsch, gebürtig aus Detmold, spielte in den ostwestfälischen Bands Speed Niggs, Sharon Stoned, Tagesschau, Kommando Schwarzer Freitag und Elektrosushi - seit 2009 veröffentlicht er unter dem Namen Tortuga Bar.
Auch in seiner Köln-Phase (2000-2008) war er aktiv, arbeitete als Journalist für die Visions, Intro und diverse Fanzines und gründete mit Klaus Cornfield (Katze, Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan) und Rocco Clein (Viva) das "Likely to be dropped DJ Team". Mark war Resident DJ im Gebäude 9 und Stereo Wonderland und spielte Schlagzeug in der Riot Grrrl Band "Klitpop".
Aktuell hat Mark eine eigene Radiosendung "Antikörper" bei ByteFM und macht auch den RIOT RADIO Podcast. Er legt immer noch unregelmäßig mit seinem "Likely to be Dropped DJ Team" auf und veranstaltet und organisiert das "Kings of Lo-Fi Festival". Mark hatte eine monatliche Kolumne "Der Indie-Stammtisch" bei Tonspion, für die ihm aber gerade die Zeit fehlt.
2009 veröffentlichte das Dortmunder "VierSieben Records" Label das erste Album von TORTUGA BAR "Narcotic Junkfood Revolution" (47 RECORDS/AL!VE/FINETUNES) mit vielen prominenten Gästen wie Evan Dando (The Lemonheads), Phillip Boa, Nagel, David Cunningham, Bernadette La Hengst, Sportfreunde Stiller, Virginia Jetzt!, Klaus Cornfield, Gitbox!, Navel, Gisbert zu Knyphausen, uvm, sowie die "Storm EP" (47 RECORDS/FINETUNES).
2015 wurde "74 on 47", ein 4 Records non-profit Free Download Project von TORTUGA BAR & SHARON STONED online auf der Homepage von "VierSieben Records" veröffentlicht.
Mark Kowarsch hat u.a. auf der "12" von The Notwist, auf "Royal Flush" von Locust Fudge, "Majordeal" von Shell und zusammen mit Nikki Sudden auf der EP von Fuse-Empire mitgewirkt. Auf der 2011 veröffentlichten Ostwestfalen Compilation "Wir kommen hier wech" findet man eins der ersten Projekte von Mark Kowarsch - in dem Projekt "Tagesschau" spielte Mark 1982 mit Frank Behnke und Florian Körner von der Band Mutter.
Mark Kowarsch komponiert auch Filmmusik und arbeitet regelmäßig mit diversen Regisseuren zusammen. Er hat Musik für die Filme "Avantgarde", "Bloody Monster", "Terror Island Overkill" und "Sex, Dogz & Rock'n'Roll" komponiert, sowie für das Hörspiel "Feeder - Schrei der Angst".
