Peel Show Recordings from the 1980s

The John Peel Show had a great influence on my musical tastes when growing up. Luckily, I was keen enough to record some of the programmes using my trusty twin-tape ‘ghetto blaster’ and these tapes have survived to this day, safely stored away…until NOW!

With modern technology, I am now digitalising these precious recordings for all to hear and enjoy 😎 :)

The second tape I have transcribed also dates from 1987, and includes sessions by ‘The Wedding Present’, ‘The Primitives’, The Bambi Slam and the legendary Peel favourites ‘Half Man Half Biscuit’, amongst other classic Indie tracks from the period - track list below. Also included are a couple of tracks from the Top 10 of Peel’s Festive 50!

There aren’t many of John’s droll and hilarious ramblings on this recording as I edited most of them out, just a few around the Festive 50 tracks 😍

This one was recorded on a Maxell UR C-90 “normal” tape (see photo) so not of the best sound quality, and now being 35 years old, you may hear a few tape stretches and glitches here and there, but hopefully I’ve captured the essence of Peel for another generation :)

80's Gen X New Waver Mobile Disco/Club Spinner in High School & College; Silicon Valley CA Product Engineering Executive/Solid State Drive Geek; Spent most of my allowances on extended, remixes and hard to find esoteric 12" dance vinyl records, used to frequent record stores in SF Bay Area (Amoeba, Rasputins, Tower, Record Factory, Star, etc.) on weekends and after class.  Still love to visit record stores & dig through bins of used records when i go on business trips. Recorded 100's of mixed tapes for classmates/friends and hours & hours in front of the turntables. Been into rock and indie music since the 1970s. Went to many gigs in the 1980s when a student. Fewer in recent years - highlights include The Smiths at Kingston Poly in 1983 (for 50p!), Iggy Pop + Suicide at Hammersmith in 2010, Iggy Pop again at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016.
