S36: Short Cuts: The Soil 6/9

Inspired by the chicks hatching in their nests outside my window this spring, this ecstatic dance is designed to explore the experience of incubating, growing, struggling to break free, and then hatching, the shock of finding ourselves in this world, bumbling around, growing, finding our power, spreading our wings, flying, and becoming ourselves, and then landing in the world as that newly formed self. This theme can be explored on both literal and metaphorical levels: we can enjoy pretending to be a bird, or we can give ourselves the human experience of rebirth – finding more of ourselves, as we are now, through this ancient movement practice. Or both!

Most of the songs in this mix have a specific meaning to this dance itself, and anyone who wants to know should email me, as SoundCloud doesn't offer enough space for me to add that in here (justine.dembo@mail.utoronto.ca). There are also some overall musical themes between the tracks, such as sounds that mimic wings flapping, or various other animal or forest noises…and the occasional rough transition to symbolize the wobbliness of being a young bird learning to fly and take off and land…

"Hatching." Live at Ecstatic Dance Cobourg May 9 2025 with voice

This is the live recording of the ecstatic dance I played for the "Inner Landscapes" event at Picton Town Hall, hosted by Terri Trickett and Tasha Bodnarchuk. The recording is imperfect and, as usual, I am fighting my perfectionism in posting it!

The title, “From the Heart," is a tribute to the track “From The Heart of the Earth," and this dance creates space to explore all that actually comes from the heart, whether we like it or not: our light, our shadows, and everything in-between. In this dance we explore myriad sources of light (love, play, happiness, vulnerability, exuberance, self-expression, growth) and of shadow (anger, lust, regret, violence, loneliness, longing, nonacceptance). We learn to love all aspects of our selves…to watch all of them flow (“Watch It Flow”)…to see the value of all aspects…so that we can feel more whole and accept the wholeness of others as well.
