'Suzume' is the 2022 animated feature from CoMix Wave Films and the seventh film from writer/director Makoto Shinkai, who most recently saw global crossover success with 'Your Name' (2016) and 'Weathering with You' (2019). 'Suzume' is a supernatural adventure wherein the eponymous heroine accompanies the mysterious Souta across Japan on a quest to track down Daijin, a mischievous cat-god who places a curse on Souta. Along the way they must close several gates that are unleashing restless spirits upon humanity. MERRY SHAQMAS EVERYONE! We kick off a pod tradition with the First Annual Shaqmas Celebration on ADHD-DVD as returning guest and FED Talks host E.J. Feddes brings an unseen film from his collection with our man Shaquille in the lead role. It's 1997's Steel, written and directed by Kenneth Johnson, and starring Shaquille O'Neal, Annabeth Gish, Judd Nelson, Richard Roundtree, Irma P. Hall, Ray J, Steve Matilla, Kevin Grevioux, and John Hawkes. Shaq has a Superman tattoo so why not cast him as a hero that is explicitly tied to Superman, a character who does not appear and is in fact never mentioned in this film even once. Join us this Christmas and every Christmas going forward for another dive into the acting ouevre of Shaq! Plus, Hayley and EJ both have field reports on The Boy and the Heron, and Hayley spreads Shaqmas cheer with a lovely gift-giving ceremony.

The final podcast of 2023, releasing in 2024 due to technical issues, is the much awaited The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki and it's more upbeat and fun than you would expect!

Hurd Ya Saw Episode 97 - The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who has previously announced his retirement three times, tells us all that The Boy and the Heron (as it's titled in most of the world; How Do You Live? in Japan) is really, honestly, for real this time, I'm super serious, his last film. His longtime producer, Toshio Suzuki, has already cast doubt on this new claim, but for now, here we have Miyazaki's final film, which tells the story of Mahito, a young boy in wartime Japan, who loses his mother in a fire and is evacuated to his aunt's countryside estate, whereupon he meets a talking grey heron that promises that his mother is alive.

José sees The Boy and the Heron as a masterpiece of cinema, a film that does things that other films have forgotten to do, a doorway to thinking about life, loss, and worlds within worlds. Mike... didn't really get on with it, but he puts it down to taste and maybe mood - any objection he has can be equally levelled at things he loves. We easily agree that Miyazaki's and Ghibli's reputation for visual design and craft holds, with image upon image here that dazzles. As for what it all adds up to? Take José's side. It's better to like things than be bored by them.
