The Women’s Fund is a nonprofit organization focused on funding programs that help to improve the lives of women and girls. The Fund focuses on areas such as economic self-sufficiency, leadership, empowerment, and mental health.

Now entering its 20th year, the Fund is made up exclusively of volunteers.

Moore and Roworth will discuss how they became engaged with the Fund, the positive impacts they’ve seen its grants having on recipients’ lives, and some of the organizations and projects the Fund has supported in Greater Newburyport, including the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center, Anna Jaques Hospital, Our Neighbors Table, and the YWCA.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with history teacher Anthony Guerriero about the legacy of bestselling author and award-winning American historian David McCullough, who died in 2022 at the age of 89 at his home in Hingham, MA.

A favorite and frequent guest on the show, Anthony in the past has shone a light on the achievements, motives, and minds of prominent figures ranging from Thomas Jefferson and Ted Williams to WWII spy Mo Berg.

This time, he illuminates what sets McCullough’s work apart from other historians, and will explore the impact of his research and writing on figures ranging from John Adams and Harry Truman to the Wright Brothers and Theodore Roosevelt, among many others.

McCullough was twice awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. As his New York Times obituary put it, “His research was deep, his writing was lively, and his narrator’s voice in documentary films was familiar to millions.”

Lazarus and Greenberg talk about NCS’s commitment to use the power of song to proclaim the community’s “fervent desire for greater unity, peace, and love for one another.” They also discuss highlights of the concert, including a celebratory Spanish song; a Moroccan Chanukah composition; an African Kwanzaa song; a Filipino Christmas carol; medieval hymns, and the ever popular Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten.

The Winter Concert will be the first conducted by new Music Director Dr. Minji Kim, who will be joined for portions of the program by the Greater Newburyport Children’s Chorus under the direction of Gina McKeown.

The concert will take place at Bellville Congregational Church on High Street at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9th and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 10th.

Woodworth, the author of “Tiptoe Through the Tombstones: Oak Hill Cemetery” and the two-volume set “Newburyport Clipper Heritage Trail,” talks about the research, public education, and tours she provides on Early Black History in Newburyport.

Woodworth also explains her use of earth penetrating radar within the African American section of Old Hill Burying Ground, and the discovery of 18 unmarked burial sites. She discusses why and how she decided to launch the “Once Known” Marker Project to place granite stones inscribed with “Once Known” at each of the 18 sites.

Woodworth also discuss why the research and teaching of our Early Black Community Members’ history and contributions matters, giving a more accurate picture of Newburyport’s past and thereby enriching our present.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Denise DeSimone, Newburyport resident and author of “From Stage IV to Center Stage,” about her journey back to wellness after she received a diagnosis of Stage IV throat cancer. She underwent an arduous treatment regimen that included radiation and multiple surgeries – including the removal of one side of her neck.

DeSimone discusses her decision to “befriend” and dialogue with her cancer, and shares the life lessons that “still small voice” made available to her. Chief among these healing lessons were the importance of relinquishing self-judgment and learning to love herself. With these lessons, the support of family and friends, and unflagging determination, DeSimone overcame the odds and transcended expectations for recovery.

Singing had always been one of her greatest joys, but her doctors told her that after surgery her singing voice might not return. Nonetheless, 22 months after diagnosis, she sang the National Anthem before a sell-out crowd of 37,000 Boston Red Sox fans at Fenway Park.

“I am living proof,” DeSimone has said, “that the unexpected can be achieved.”

DeSimone describes how her book and her healing journey have enabled her to “touch many lives in positive ways. From public speaking to supporting people one-on-one across the country, I have become a real-life inspiration and mentor to many. Not only those struggling with cancer, but also many who struggle with the plethora of life’s challenges.”

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Jason Ianuzzi, Artistic Director of the 34-member Cantemus Chamber Chorus, about their upcoming performance of British composer James Whitbourn’s “Annalies,” the only major choral-orchestral work based on excerpts from “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.”

Lynn Eustis, Associate Professor and Chair of Voice at Boston University, accompanies Ianuzzi and discusses her role as title soloist for the performance.

Ianuzzi talks about the work’s emotional impact, which he has described as one of “haunting beauty.” He explains the work’s enduring importance, and why he scheduled the performance to coincide with International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th.

Eustis talks about having performed as title soloist at the work’s U.S. premiere in 2007, and how her interpretation and understanding of the role and its significance has evolved over time.

“Annalies” will be performed on Saturday, January 20th at St. Paul’s Church in Newburyport at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, January 21st at the Congregation Shirat Hayam synagogue in Swampscott at 4 p.m.

She will be Scholar in Residence at Congregation Ahavas Achim in Newburyport on Sunday, April 14th, presenting a workshop at 3 p.m. titled, “In the Scribe’s Studio.”

Seltzer talks about how she chose her unusual profession; what makes a text sacred; what it was like as a woman to enter a male dominated field; the methods, tools, and intentions she brings to her work; and why inscribing a Torah – which includes the five books of Moses – requires a precise and uniform calligraphy, thereby linking past, present, and future.

Seltzer also discusses why her workshop, which will be free and open to the public, will be of interest to the arts community as well as the broader faith community.

Greenberg and Lazarus speak about how the musical selections, curated by NCS Music Director Dr. Minji Kim, reflect the concert’s theme of “Resilience and Hope.” They discuss why Maurice Durufle’s renowned Requiem has been described as “peaceful and chant-like” in some parts, yet “exciting and bold” in others; what makes French composer Lili Boulanger’s Psalm 24 “majestic”; and how Rosephanye Powell’s “Cry of Jeremiah” achieves its “rousing heights.”

They also talk about the mysticism of North Shore composer Mary Montgomery Koppel’s “Stabat Mater Speciosa” and the lyricism of “Spring in My Hometown,” by Hye-Young-Cho, composer-in-residence for the National Chorus of Korea.

Greenberg and Lazarus also describe NCS’s Guest Conductor for the concert, Brad Dumont, who holds a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Boston University and recently served as Director of Choral Activities at Assumption University.

Saturday’s concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s at 4 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the new Pentucket Regional High School Auditorium, 24 Main Street, Route 113, in West Newbury. An 18-piece orchestra and two soloists, soprano Katherine Maysek and baritone Will Prapestis will accompany the chorus.

Interview With "The Morning Show" Writer Bill Kennedy

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Co-founder of the Playwrights Collaborative (TPC) Jack Rushton and Steering Committee member Camille Garro about TPC’s origins in 2012 as a group of actors, directors, and playwrights devoted to producing new stage plays, starting out with the Actors Studio of Newburyport (TASN) as home base, for which they produced numerous plays, including 5 National Short Play Festivals, the proceeds of which benefitted TASN.

Rushton and Garro discuss how TPC has grown in size from 15 to 50 members, and has expanded the range of locations served and types of arts and cultural organizations where they stage productions. Recent venues have included the Custom House Maritime Museum, the Chelmsford Center for the Arts, and the Nashoba Players, with an upcoming performance planned for July 20th at the Exeter Public Library.

Throughout, TPC remains true to what Rushton describes as their mission, “to benefit host-venues by providing great theater to their audiences and patrons, all the while giving all of our members a chance to shine.” They continue their practice of donating proceeds to the host venues.
