Psalm 23 – The Shepherd’s Psalm

Description:
Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved and quoted Psalms, attributed to King David, who himself was once a shepherd. It presents God as a personal, caring shepherd who provides, guides, protects, and restores. The imagery of green pastures, still waters, and walking through the valley of the shadow of death conveys deep assurance in God's presence through all seasons of life.

Hebrew Background:
In the ancient Near East, the metaphor of kings or deities as shepherds was common, but David's use of it is deeply personal and spiritual. “The valley of the shadow of death” likely refers to dark ravines in the Judean wilderness where predators and bandits lurked. This psalm speaks not only of physical safety but of the shalom—peace and wholeness—that comes from trusting in Yeshua.
