It’s aliiiiive! It’s aliiiiive! Electroclash is BACK BACK BACK AGAIN, just like I’ve been saying it would be! 🎉🪩⚡️

In this episode of Internet Excess, I did some live DJing on the turntables, while *also* discussing the rise and fall and rise again of Electroclash, the HYPER-influential (see what I did there? 😉) niche microgenre of sparse, minimalist, DIY Dance-Punk that began in the early 00’s...or did it? 🤔

While DJing some Electroclash classics (some “Club Classics” if you will), I draw a through-line between electronic punk music’s reincarnation over the years:

New Wave/Post-Punk in the 80’s => Electroclash (AKA “New-New-Wave”, AKA “Post-Post-Punk”) in the 00’s => Hyperpop (what I’m coining as “Newest Wave”™️ or “Post-Post-𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵-Punk”™️) in the 10’s/20’s. 🎸🔋

After all, even Hyperpop artist underscores refers to her music as “the New Wave of the future”!  🌊🤖

There *are* key differences, of course (Hyperpop is more maximalist, for starters), but the through-line between the Electroclash scene retroactively referred to as “indie sleaze” and our current era of internet excess is made apparent in this episode of Internet Excess. Hell, the very name of this show - a title I made as a better summary of what “Hyperpop” really means - is essentially a synonym for the term “Indie Sleaze” itself: an embrace of in-your-face, no-holds-barred, era-defining niche/independent music that revels in coming home with glitter on your face, revels in being messy, revels in being…Brat… 👀🧑🏻‍🎤

This episode of Internet Excess is from January 2024, and during it, I predicted a true Electroclash (not just Hyperpop) resurgence would come - little did I know JUST how soon I would be right, with Charli XCX’s “Brat” embracing the spoken-word-sing-rapping of Electroclash and Bloghaus stars like Uffie (as well as the disaffected verb listicle of Daft Punk’s “Technologic”), Snow Strippers’ “So What If I’m A Freak” embracing into the goth-8-bit bops of duo of Crystal Castles💎🏰, provocateur Brooke Candy reviving the stomp-clap, call-and-response feminist earworms of The Ting Tings and Peaches 🍑, The Dare reenacting the minimalist blasé of LCD Soundsystem 📻, and other “Dimes Square” NY Scene-sters trying to recreate the hipster sleaze of the 00’s indie NYC scene and Myspace era. 🔊✨

Hell, to further prove my point, I even did a Part 2 to this episode of Internet Excess 9 months later in Sept. 2024, where I again get behind the decks, this time Dj-ing back-and-forth between 00’s Electroclash staples and their early 2020’s sonic-equivalents as part of the “indie sleaze” (Electroclash) revivaL: See Episode # 65 for that! Anyways, just wanted to toot my own horn for a minute there. Sorry for being right! Let the record show that I was right! I’m not just a trendsetter - I’m a trend WEATHERVANE. I always know what direction the winds are blowing. 🌬️ Take out your skinny jeans…late 00’s/early 10’s revivalism will be starting in 2026, calling it NEOW! 👖🌦️🌈
