FROGGORE - TOAD LICKER

01/12/2023 A floating bungalow village on Cheow Larn Lake in Khao Sok National Park.
The first soundscape was recorded at night time, when most of the tourists and locals were asleep. Kayaks bubbling on the lapping waves, metal constructions creaking, crickets and suddenly Southeast Asian Toads (Duttaphrynus melanostictus) croaking in the mountain-peak-island next to the floating village. I've edited together three recordings from slightly different perspectives. Brass-instrument-like-sounding constructions, bubbling kayaks and floating devices, and this strange smooch-like-sound-creating insect that I couldn’t identify! (mayyybe Liara magna brachyptera?)

Nice to be back at it and what better way to spend the day at my nearest lake enjoying this annual sceptical of mating Toads with a Chiffchaff in full spring song. 

One thing worth noting in this recording, is that I didn't have anything particularly 'in focus' during this recording, as all subjects were out of site or far off in the distance, which I think goes to show just how transparent the Schoes microphones are off-axis, especially considering there was an omni directional mk 2 inside the dish too.

when tasked with making "frog style music", the first thing i did was use my phone to record some frogs chirping. using that as a jumping off point, i layered some randomized arpeggios to evoke the shimmer of sunlight off of a pond. the next section has these bright FM pads, deep bass, and powerful drums... i wanted it to feel like you're stepping outside, and your senses are overwhelmed by the sunlight.
as for the lyrics... i'm going through a lot of major changes in my life, and so the frogs (transformed from tadpoles), as well as the start of spring, are meant to represent a major rebirth, a new beginning. the second half of the lyrics, for me means that even if you might feel like you're alone, and no one acknowledges you, as long as a single person appreciates something that you put into the world, then that's enough to make life worth living.
