Deron Daum has announced his third full length album entitled “Ondolindë” - pronounced ON-doe-LIN-dae. The name is taken from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Silmarillion” and is the original name of the city of Gondolin, the last elven city to be destroyed in the long war against the evil god Morgoth. Each song is told from the perspective of a different character, culminating in a dynamic emotional anthology of people linked by a single city. Although the album is rooted in the stories of Tolkien, the lyrics apply to experiences of modern life, from desire for personal freedom to darker stories of ambition and revenge, told both with authenticity and empathy but also a clear-eyed assessment of the human condition. For example, the song “Calm of the Night” tells of the elf Aredhel but also a woman embroiled in controversy who wishes to escape the bright lights of publicity. In contrast, “Don’t Run Away” illustrates a cycle of domestic abuse and a pathological need for control.

Daum wrote and recorded 13 tracks for the album between October ’23 and March ’24. He then enlisted guitarist Seth Paul and drummer Anna Mariko Seymour (Prismia) to record the songs as a live 3-piece band. The result is an organic and vibrant album full of amazing musicianship. Daum explains, “Everything I’ve done up to this point has been just me, with sampled drums and sparse guitar. I wanted this album to be authentic, with captivating melodies and less beeps and bloops.” Daum has managed to define his own sound, built on influences ranging from 70s Art Rock to recent acts such as Phoebe Bridgers, Dayglow and Circa Waves. The album ranges from gorgeous ballads to driving alt-rock reminiscent of The Sherlocks or At the Drive-In, but most of the songs probe the possibilities between, experimenting with unique rhythms and chords layered with intricate vocal harmonies.
