Episode 387: ElleyCat is BACK!!! To Talk About Her Acting Career & Elley Knows Rocks

Cool Bits, GameXplain's video game trivia series, is back after its five-year hiatus!  And with its return is the debut of a new theme that was in the works for the past decade.  This one has quite the story behind it.  In December 2014, I pitched the idea of creating an original theme for Cool Bits to replace the Groovy Mandolin royalty-free theme, accompanied by an uninitialised substitution for the sound effect used at the time.  A couple of melody ideas were developed during this process.  Sadly, nothing really nailed the appropriate flavour, so I had to shelf the theme for a while.  But over the next few years, I dabbled with revamping it by transcribing it over to WarioWare D.I.Y.'s Record MakerMatic to establish a chiptune base.  The theme improved a lot from there, and I much more recently brought it back over to Cakewalk.  After significant refinement and expansion, it developed into what it is now.

The piece starts with an arrangement of Groovy Mandolin for its intro, but it soon transitions into an original melody.  Interestingly enough, this chosen melody was used in GameXplain's discontinued podcast, Real Talk, after being imagined for Cool Bits first, but this association now ties the motifs for GameXplain practically into musical lore.   Ever since being transferred from chiptune form, the composition stayed almost purely synth, with an accoustic piano as the exception.  It also retained the swung note flow.  Together, the catchy sound is the 'Cool' and the digital elements are the 'Bits'.  Imagine that!  If this is well-received, I may upload the WarioWare D.I.Y. version also upon request.  Please enjoy this theme that was ten years in the making!

GameXplain - Cool Bits

As J Mo rapidly approaches (or has perhaps already passed?) 3000 films watched all-time on Letterboxd, it felt fitting to kick off a new year with the story of another man who thought he'd hit the 3000 plateau only for it to be taken away from him on a technicality, as we try to whip ourselves back in to game-shape for 2025 by watching a sports comedy that's a little too light on laughs. It's 2004's Mr. 3000, directed by Charles Stone III, and starring Bernie Mac, Angela Bassett, Michael Rispoli, Dondré Whitfield, Paul Sorvino, Chris Noth, Keegan-Michael Key, Dane Cook and Tom Arnold. While the movie never really finds its groove comedically, it's still a charming sports twist on the cocky-hothead-gets-humbled archetype that does a great job of using existing teams, leagues and sports TV shows to make the whole thing feel somewhat real. This is to say nothing of Bernie Mac, who has more than enough charisma to carry this even when the script isn't entirely where it needs to be. Plus: we take a good half-hour off the top of the first show of the new year to countdown our duelling lists of the Top Ten Films of 2024.

ADHD-DVD - 95 - Mr. 3000

Here's some original music from Carpoon, a downloadable Windows game being developed by Tom Arnold from GameXplain!  In Carpoon, you control a pick-up truck and harpoon escaping cars sentenced to recycling by car crusher, towing them to their doom!  The game can be played in both single player and local multiplayer for competitive demolishing action.  This theme—now extended—features on the Volcarnage Island map, where two active volcanoes spew giant molten globs of lava that land on the asphalt, adding some dangerously hot obstacles to the environment.  There are two versions of this music: one for normal gameplay, and one for when the timer has less than 30 seconds remaining.

When originally composing this piece, I wanted to capture the feeling of a dangerous volcanic island, keeping in mind the whimsy of the game's art style and the light-hearted fun found in the gameplay.  The composition developed into something you might hear in a Donkey Kong Country game, but with some musical effects that mimic automobile sounds here and there.  Towards the beginning, the slide of the bass guitar imitates a revving engine while the mute trumpet later is very akin to the honking of a car horn.  Overall, it turned out to be a catchy, playful piece with a bit of an adventurous, tropical vibe.  But its length was much shorter than other stage themes that followed.

About five years later, I revisited the theme upon request and updated it to feature twice the content as before in order to increase its duration to level comparable to other stage themes.  The first idea was to include various shouts to ramp up the intensity, bringing the composition from the drum solo to the climax of the piece.  The almost chaotic feeling near the end was made to match the feeling of the active volcanoes as they erupt their balls of lava onto the ground, peaking with the trill sound of the zaghrouta yell near the end.  With the pre-established content that only was polished a little, these new sections are intended to bring more variety, dynamics, and memorable quality to the theme.  Have fun listening!
