I made this in response to Michael Knowles speech at CPAC the other day. I simply replaced the word "transgenderism" with Christianity, the perspective Knwles is attacking trans people from. It's funny how replacing one minority group in fascist speech can really illustrate how much HATE is being poured into what he's saying. This is a protest. I love Christians in a strange platonic kind of way, but their views should NOT intersect with politics. Ever.

Episode 446: It's A Ratchet Revolution! Feat. Jewel the Gem

Our Guest is a trailblazer in the surfing world. On March 2022, Sasha Jane Lowerson placed ninth in the Noosa Festival of Surfing, becoming the first trans woman to compete in surfing at the professional level. Two months later, she placed first in the Open Women's and Women's Logger divisions at the Western Australian State Titles. This win garnered her a lot of attention and has provoked the surfing world to have the conversation about the inclusion of trans athletes in the world of professional surfing. 

On February 3 of this year, the World Surf League (WSL) announced a new policy allowing trans women to compete in its women’s category if they prove their testosterone levels fall within a defined range. While this announcement was originally released somewhat quietly, the following days Bethany Hamilton then went to social media to protest this decision and boycott all WSL events. 
On Swell Season, we tried to have a thoughtful conversation with our friends at Benny’s Club and try to sift through the mountain of misinformation that is out there. Our conversation inevitably drifted towards Sasha and all the incredible work she has done. The conversation got her attention and we wanted to allow her to speak on her behalf and also get to know her more. Sasha is our guest on this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast.

I was delighted to be invited to perform at this recent event, and while I thought I was bringing my A-game, half way through my first set on Saturday night (early morning actually), I had cleared the floor. Several hundred bouncy happy people slowly drifted away and suddenly I was left spinning to an empty room. It was a humbling experience, to say the least. When the next DJ took over, I went back to my campsite feeling mortified, embarrassed and totally out of place. I was way out of my league. Was I the right kind of DJ for this gig?

After a restless night and a lot of coffee, I was listening to the DJs spinning down the hill at the big Sunday afternoon “recovery” pool party. And they were absolutely bringing it in a way I had long forgotten, triggering so many feelings and memories. They brought me back to a world I had forgone for decades. 

“Girl,” I said to myself, “if you play the set tonight you had planned, they are absolutely going to hate it!”

And I got inspired, broke out my gear on the picnic table, and started doing my homework, threw together a new 1-hour banger, which turned out to be well-received. A little success did wonders for my ego, and encouraged my sense of belonging. And I have the following very talented DJs to thank for resurrecting my spirits and bringing me back:

It's hard. It's difficult. It's messy. It's dangerous. But everyone owes it to themselves to be themselves. Declare your existence. You matter. I matter. Continue the fight for equal protection and justice under the law. You are not alone. The waiting is over. The time is now.

A dear friend told me my sets felt like you never knew where you're going, but were always happy when you got there. As a Groove Guardian creating AuralSonic Journeys, I could not ask for higher praise.

Music is a special language I have experienced, practiced and absorbed my entire life. And now in my "Golden Years", I practice this complex craft using the simplest of tools and as little FX as possible. Less is so much more. I avoid artificially contrived tension and release, and prefer to let music express what is already inherent; if it works, don't fix it.

My Dad was a Choir Master and Music Director (from the Royal School of Church Music in London, England). I grew up listening to him playing the piano every day. He started me singing at age 7 (1963), and for the ensuing three decades, I was immersed and trained in music structure, classical history, sight-reading and singing in quartets, sextets, octets, madrigals, Gregorian chants, school choruses, professional chorales and soloist in the sacred circuits of LA. 

In 1968, I was collecting first-issue releases from the Turtles and the Beatles. I graduated Santa Monica High School in 1974, and  was programming house party mix tapes on cassette tape. Of course it was very linear, but even then I was thinking outside the box. With the advent of DAW’s, it’s a whole new world!

Today, it’s about inspiring and uplifting people through music's universal language. It’s about feelings and passion using an eclectic mix of genres and styles, new, old, obscure and popular. I want to set free your heart, your mind and your body. 

Burning Man and Sweets Ballroom – not to mention the Dungeons and Play Spaces in San Francisco & Oakland – have irrevocably altered my musical DNA. The new, expanding universe of Ecstatic Dance journeys feels like a natural fit, and I incorporate its tenants into every set I create.
