Widely recognized as one of the most influential and beloved figures in the field of peacebuilding, John Paul Lederach embodies both the rigor of the scholar and sensitivity of the poet. A pioneer of the concept of conflict transformation (as distinct from resolution), his work has redefined peacebuilding as a moral and relational art rooted in empathy, moral imagination, and the human capacity for connection across divides. Join TNS Host Serena Bian for this intergenerational conversation exploring John Paul's enormous body of work in building the fields of conflict transformation and collective trauma healing--as well as his love for poetry and haiku.


John Paul Lederach
Dr. John Paul Lederach is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the fields of peacebuilding and conflict transformation. He is widely known for the development of culturally based approaches to conflict transformation; the design and implementation of integrative, strategic approaches to peacebuilding; and for carving a robust integration of the arts and social change. Over the course of his career, Lederach has garnered extensive experience working with non-governmental organizations, community-based initiatives impacted by cycles of violence, and national peace process design. He has worked extensively as a practitioner in conciliation processes in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast and Central Asia. He is the author or editor of 30 books and manuals (translated into a dozen languages), and numerous academic articles and monographs on peace education, conflict transformation, international peacebuilding, and conciliation training. He currently serves as Senior Fellow for Humanity United and Professor Emeritus of International Peacebuilding at the Joan B. Kroc Institute of International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Serena is pursuing a life that remains attentive to the tenderness of a snail’s soft body and reverent to the miracle of its spiraled shell. She is a Chinese-American peacebuilder, storyteller, and community weaver devoted to the belief that intergenerational connection is vital for the future of our peace and justice movements. She recently completed six years as a Special Advisor in Design & Innovation to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, bringing a spiritual and systemic understanding to the public health crisis of loneliness and isolation. She is a Zen chaplain-in-training and serves on the boards of CoGenerate and Commonweal.

This Advent season, Gayle Parker opened by inviting us to rethink where real life actually begins. John’s prologue reminds us that Jesus didn’t simply enter the world in Bethlehem—He is the eternal Word who was present before creation, the One through whom all things came into being. In a season when we’re tempted to believe life will start “once we get there”—once we succeed, once we have enough, once things finally feel stable—John confronts us with a different truth. Real life is found not in our future milestones but in the Light who is already shining.
Through Amber’s story, Gayle showed how easily we follow false saviors—external pressures, internal fears, or habits that promise life but slowly steal it. Yet John insists that darkness never gets the final word. The light of Christ keeps breaking in, illuminating our choices and calling us to draw near to Him. Our task isn’t to manufacture light on our own, but to stay close to the One who brings it, letting His presence shape the way we live right now.

I'm seeing and having recently are about some significant challenges of upper limits that are hitting a health issue. It reminds me of a story of a client, kind of what I call my way back machine, more than 10 years ago, and this beautiful soul came to me. She had a job and she really just wanted more and things to work better and her life to get on track. And as we continued to work through the energetic container limits, the mental limits, the emotional limits, the relationship limits, there were a lot of these limits. And as we worked through these in very bizarre ways she would hit another level and her body would have a fit and her body would get sick. Know what I'm talking about? It became we got her from $150,000 a year income. I think the next level was $600,000 a year. And she wanted to go and move to another company and the other company was giving her more responsibility. And okay, so we worked through that, that was amazing. She went to the other company, she did a few things and thought oh god I got to go back to this other founder. She and I have a rhythm. And so she goes back to this other company and she hit another health limit and this other health limit got bigger and more compounded. One of the reasons it got more compounded is because she was going to take more of a leadership role. She was going to need to use different parts of herself, learn to be someone different physically, energetically, emotionally, and especially out into the community. And it's not like she wasn't up for the task. It was her inner voice, upper limits that are not so loud. We have inner voice upper limits that often stop us. I mean, I can tell you tons of mine. I've told you a bunch of those in previous episodes. But hers was really an unknown. It was unknown because it was such a foreign concept to get such big numbers. And so the next level that was going to get hit was about $2 million. And it was based upon we helped her with a new sales methodology and we helped her have a new type of conversation with this entrepreneur. And so she ended up getting some piece of the company in a partnership role and it was a very unique perspective based upon my history of helping companies grow and get sold. I was helping the employee inside of the company help the entrepreneur grow the business. So that's called an intrapreneur. Anyway, the resilience that we were helping her get on track with was no matter where she went financially, physically, mentally, and relationally, because relationships broke during that time, we were going to get to that next level. Long story short, we got her to a buyout, meaning she got to be part owner of that company, and that company got sold for about 10 or 11 million. Her part was 10 or 11 million. The company got sold for a couple hundred million. The thing that is important to acknowledge here for you is where are you not being resilient and you are having inner upper limits that you don't know you're hitting. Most times people hit those inner upper limits when it comes to money and it comes to health and that's a whole way that it needs to be new, rebirthed, reborn, reset and reignited. Ich habe herausgefunden, dass ich mir Zeit nehmen muss, um mich aus einer schwierigen Situation zurückzuziehen, damit Führung kommen kann, anstatt darauf zu reagieren. Wenn ich mir die Zeit nehme, still zu sein und nichts zu tun, kommt immer die Antwort; und die Antwort lautet immer, meinen Weg aufzugeben. Dann kommt mir eine Einsicht, die ich nicht gehabt hätte, wenn ich mich auf mein eigenes Denken verlassen hätte. Das Leben wird dann in einem Zustand der Inspiration gelebt, anstatt zu versuchen, die Dinge selbst herauszufinden. Wenn ich mir aus dem Weg gehe, indem ich meine Interpretationen und Urteile aufgebe, werden die Kanäle frei, damit Seine Liebe durchkommen kann.

Seit über 20 Jahren begleite ich Menschen auf einer der wertvollsten Reisen überhaupt – der Reise zu sich selbst. Als Journey Practitioner und Conscious Coach erlebe ich immer wieder, wie transformierend es ist, wenn jemand beginnt, sich klarer, freier und authentischer zu spüren. Diese tiefgreifenden Prozesse teile ich auch als offizielle Seminarleiterin für The Journey® von Brandon Bays im deutschsprachigen Raum und verbinde dabei bewährte Weisheit mit lebendigen, neuen Impulsen.
Ein weiterer wichtiger Baustein meiner Arbeit ist „Seelensprache mit Pferden". Gemeinsam mit den Pferden lade ich Menschen ein, in ihre intuitive Weisheit einzutauchen und dadurch den eigenen, wahrhaftigen Ausdruck zu finden. Diese Vision lebe ich auch als Mitbegründerin von „Komm Zeig Dich" – weil ich zutiefst glaube, dass jede Stimme wichtig ist.
Meine Reise führte mich kürzlich zu Thomas Hübl, wo ich mich zum Facilitator für Kollektives Trauma ausbilden ließ. Diese Erfahrung hat meine Arbeit noch einmal vertieft und erweitert – hin zu einem ganzheitlichen Ansatz, der innere Entwicklung mit kollektivem Wandel verbindet.
