Tonight’s Full Circle, discusses A Black Women’s History of the United States by Daina Ramey Berry & Kali Nicole Gross. All five women are contained in the powerful and important pages of A Black Women’s History of the United States because they all voice their visions of liberation, courageously resist, and assert their autonomy and authority in calling for social justice and how to achieve it.  Black Women musicians provide the soundtrack to accompany and amplify these freedom dreams and calls for collective liberation. Tracy Chapman, Seinabo Sey, Alicia Keys, Andra Day, Nina Simone, and Shelly Doty with Skip the Needle are heard in this hour.

Abolition Science Fiction (2022) is a collection of sci-fi short stories written by activists and scholars involved in prison abolition and transformative justice in the UK, edited by Phil Crockett Thomas. The stories are not all explicitly about prison abolition, but all of them explore the underlying question of how we can live well together, tackling complex topics like violence, revenge, responsibility, care, and community. As such they can help us imagine a future where we respond to harm without exclusion and punishment, illustrating Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s contention that ‘abolition requires that we change one thing: everything.’ Alongside the stories are extracts from discussions from the workshops where we wrote and shared the stories. There are also creative writing exercises and discussion prompts, included to help listeners explore ideas about abolition and transformative justice in creative ways. The book is aimed both at those curious about abolition and at seasoned activists who want to explore abolition through creative writing.

First Voice Media is building a lasting institution for women, people of color, and under-resourced communities to learn media skills and gain access to radio as a means of empowerment using mass communications and art.

Members of First Voice Media produce, write, host, and engineer Full Circle, a cultural affairs radio magazine which showcases personal views, interviews, feature stories, and live performances from our community. Airing on Friday at 7pm on KPFA 94.1, all content comes from members of First Voice Media and reaches all across northern and central California.

I’m an activist and critical criminologist living in Ottawa with an interest in social justice, human rights, and anti-oppression. My tracks are typically interviews from local media. I do this as a method of public criminology and knowledge sharing to ensure transformative actions and based on lived experience and academic knowledge.
