This field recording is a walk through the bird market at Yuen Po Street, Hong Kong. I am with Chung Wong, a local Hong Kong artist who helps me with translation from Cantonese to English. Chung asks the vendors about the birds. Birds fetch different prices, and the vendors are vague about which bird is which, and no names are mentioned.

	The bird market is a difficult listening experience. We are concerned about the captivity of the birds, and we both experience discomfort at being there.  Many birds are clearly distressed by their captivity, particularly larger birds. But many of the birds' songs are also beautiful to hear and both the vendors and customers admire the birds as they negotiate prices based on the songs they hear. Caged birds sing more loudly and more frequently than birds in the wild and it is a rich but deeply troubling listening experience.
