Juno Review: Jay Tripwire has popped up a lot recently, which is always going to be good news for fans of those freaky late-night tech sounds that he is so well known and loved for. He kicks off Serenity's fifth release here alongside Jehr on 'Magic Man', a deep cut underlapping drum funk and lots of whirring machine sounds. Parisian space techno talent Cyberduck then takes care of both tunes on the flip - firstly 'Arzach', a deep and dynamic cut that hurriedly scans a vast cosmic world with silvery drums and lush melodies. Then 'Cerclon' gets a little more edgy, with dark and nagging baselines moving up through the mix as the crisp, well-swung tech drums power along.

Jay Tripwire & Jehr - Magic Man (SER005)

I wrote this with another producer, Tripwire, in 2010. One of our best tunes together in my opinion. Still love this one to this day. I was still relatively new to music production and to dubstep and future garage and I learned a lot from Tripwire and our collaborations together. You can check out his other stuff here: https://soundcloud.com/trpwr/tracks We made a few good tracks together and I always really enjoyed working with him. Haven't been in touch in a long time. I hope he's doing alright these days. I've done what I can with this. Sadly, again, I don't have the old stems or project files so I'm working with an old mp3 file. Stem separation tools make things a little easier but it's still a challenge to really bring this to a modern production standard. One of the big problems with this one was the dynamic range. I think Tripwire and I both liked it at the time, the variance between the soft parts and the future garage style chorus gave it a weird ambient atmospheric feel but on re-listening the difference was perhaps a little too extreme. I've tried to keep the dynamic range while softening the impact of the chorus parts a little.
