ネットが繋がらない。

最初は、PCの設定を確認してみる。Wi-Fiはオンになっているし、特におかしな設定も見当たらない。次にルーターを見てみるが、ランプは異常なし。嫌な予感が胸をよぎる。

とにかく、全てのネットワーク機器の電源をオフにして、再起動を試みる。１分、２分…と時間が過ぎるが、状況は変わらず。ネットワークは未だに繋がらない。

「やばい、これじゃ会議に間に合わない…！」

焦りが募る。今度はHUBに繋がっている全てのLANケーブル、１３本を一旦全部抜いて、一つずつ挿し直してPINGテストを始める。一つ一つ、地道に確認する。

時間は刻々と過ぎ、９時が近づいてくる。手が震える。会議の開始時間に間に合わないことが確定して、やむなく上司に詫びのメッセージを送る。「申し訳ありません、ネットワークトラブルで接続ができません…」

そしてまた、LANケーブルと格闘する。机の下に潜り込み、埃まみれの床に顔を押し付けながらケーブルを辿る。古い配線が絡み合っているのを掻き分けて、一つずつ丁寧に確認する。この作業、なかなか骨が折れる。

「使ってないケーブル…これか？」と見つけた２本のLANケーブルをHUBから取り外し、残りを元通りに差し直す。そして最後のPINGテスト。祈るような気持ちで結果を待つと…

「…繋がった！」

無事にネットワークが復旧した。原因は結局分からないままだが、とにかく繋がったことにほっとする。でも、時すでに遅し。会議は既に終了している時間だ。体中が汗と埃でベタベタだし、朝からこんな無駄な労力を使って、もうクタクタだ。

デスクに戻り、ぐったりと椅子に座り込む。やれやれ、と大きな溜息をつき、ふと自分の姿を見下ろす。汗まみれで埃っぽい服、そして画面には「会議終了」のメッセージ。

「今日は、もう何もしたくない…」
