Parenting Day 23: I Failed As a Parent, Now What?

Calm, rest, and peace come to us when Jesus becomes the great treasure of our lives. When Jesus is cherished as our inheritance and when we discover that he promises to give himself to us in deep personal relationship, this changes how we experience each day. Living in calm confidence is the result of prizing the Lord Jesus above all else.

About the Author
John Kitchen grew up on the plains of the Midwest in a good, but unbelieving family. After his father, sister, and he nearly died in an asphyxiation accident, his mother began seeking God. This led to John's surrender to Christ as a teen. God called him into ministry at the age of twenty, and he and his wife of over forty years have faithfully served together in full-time ministry since 1987. In 2020, God called the Kitchens to serve an international church in the Middle East.

What happens when ordinary people become vessels for extraordinary power? In Acts 9:32-43, we witness Peter's healing ministry in action—not as a display of personal ability, but as a demonstration of Christ working through His church.

Evangelist Eric Love walks us through two remarkable miracles: the healing of Aeneas, a man paralyzed and bedridden for eight years, and the raising of Tabitha (Dorcas) from the dead. These weren't magic tricks performed behind closed doors. These were immediate, undeniable acts of divine power witnessed by entire communities—and they had a singular purpose.

The healing of Aeneas reveals something crucial about how the apostles operated. Peter didn't pray extensively or work himself into a frenzy of faith. He simply declared, "Jesus Christ heals you." But this wasn't presumption—it was prompted obedience. As Eric explains, the apostles weren't walking around declaring healing on anyone they encountered. They moved when the Holy Spirit moved, and they always pointed the credit back to Christ.

When Tabitha died, the church in Joppa knew where to turn. Word of Peter's ministry had spread, and they sent for him urgently. After prayer, Peter commanded Tabitha to arise—and she did. The result? "Many believed in the Lord."

This is the pattern throughout Acts: miracles served the mission. Signs and wonders testified to the truth of the gospel message.

But here's the application that hits home: every conversion is a miracle. When we share the gospel, we're not relying on our eloquence, our arguments, or our persuasive abilities. Paul himself admitted he came "in weakness and in fear and in much trembling." Yet people were saved—because God's power was at work.

Eric challenges us to relinquish confidence in ourselves and place it entirely in Christ. As we witness to family, coworkers, and neighbors, we can trust that Jesus is pursuing every person we speak to. He died for the whole world—He desperately wants them saved.
