TT-047: Individual vs Society/Fairytale

This place scooby doo be spooky.😱

I wanted to write something that fits an upcoming music pack I'm working on that's themed around an overgrown, abandoned castle, and this prompt fits perfectly. Individual vs Society can be seen as a lone adventurer facing the haunts within the castle halls! I composed this track to work as an ambience that the player would commonly hear throughout inside the castle, so it doesn't have much going on in the melody department, although the Kalimba I guess you could say is the catchy part of the song. I sprinkled in some Low Wood arpeggios and long, decaying notes for some flair which sounds wicked sick. It mostly is just ambient, tense low chords with the droning Glock AKA THAT MF THANG to give it that "There's definitely something magical and mysterious going on here." kind of feeling.

Tuesday Tunes 047: These Haunted Halls

TT-048: Descent Into Madness/Alternate Universe

HONK! I said what I said…I'd rather paint the town DEAD🤡

Blappo no…what are you doing? STOP IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAlrighty then let's break this thang down. This is actually a boss battle theme about a killer clown from an old canceled project I worked on. I've been wanting to revisit it for a while and this prompt felt like a good time to do it. Boss themes are so much fun. I love writing chaotic melodies and arpeggios and just wacky and wild riffs in general. Since the theming is centered around clowns, I stuck with common instruments used in clown or circus music. I chose an Organ for the wild and tense chord combinations it can produce, and the staccato notes in the C sections sound so crispy and bouncy. The Xylophone scooby doo be goin' hard, with the octave layering coupled with the Bass. I also triple layered the Xylophone, each detuned 1 semitone from each other and the volume lowered and panned, so it gives a strange sound of uncertainty. I used a full Woodwind section for chords and alternating melody lines because they sound goofy and spooky, and I love when orchestral pieces use the Woodwinds to take turns playing melodies. So playful! The breakbeat drums just add another chaotic, and unpredictable layer to the clown theme and they just he*kin RIP dude.

TT-049: Tech Gone Nuts/Scifi

I'M TRYING TO USE THE PHONE!!

Oh yes, the return of the malfunctioning, malicious household appliances! (TT-011, 035) This is such a goofy and fun game concept. I am definitely planning on writing more for this and releasing it as a music pack! I was feeling the itch to write something in a metal band composition, but make it chiptune. I setup the Pulse 12.5% as the Left Lead, the  Pulse 25% as the Right Lead, Add 2 for Left Rhythm, Pulse 1% for Right Rhythm, Triangle + BASS Slap for Bass, and Drumkit 1 for the Drums. I loved the upbeat craziness from "TT-035 Blender Beatdown", so I wanted to bring that style back. For the lead melodies, I started writing the Left Lead first and wanted to repeat it on the Right Lead, but I copy/pasted in the wrong spot which led to the offbeat variation, which was just a nice happy little accident. And then I got crazy and tried to layer them on top of each other and it turned off to be he*kin wild dude.

TT-050: Pursuit/Western

The stars at night are big and bright 👏👏👏👏

I was really feelin' somethin' with this prompt. I woke up one morning and the only thing I could think about was writing a western adventure song. Maybe it's because of the western themed Got Item! show I'm playing this weekend. Maybe I just wanna be a horse idk dude. Anyway, I wanted to write more songs for an eventual Western Music Pack, so I chose my last Western prompt (TT-036) for a basis. Sticking with the classics, I used Nylon Grandpa's Guitars and Bass for the rhythms for that good ol' fashioned cowfolk sound. I just picked up Berlin Woodwinds so I really wanted to try out the Flute patch for the melody and see what the HYUCK was up. I'm still getting used to the articulations, but I was able to use the key switches to get it sounding good enough. For the counterpoint, I used solo Violin and there's some real nice harmonies up in that binch. For the Percussion, I just copy/pasted from TT-036 and added more Tamborine and introduced a Snare pattern for extra adventure-y feeling. It's a common practice in game soundtracks to reuse parts, but alter them a bit for variance and feel depending on the goal. I also reused the motif from TT-036 and TT-005 in this track. Can you spot it?

TT-051: Power Corruption/Dark Fantasy

A dark a gloomy tower with unknown shadowy entities scattered throughout? Let's split up gang!

For this prompt, I've had this motif stuck in my head from one of my previous unfinished projects that I've always wanted to expand upon. One of the main things that's been stopping me is I didn't have a good Harpsichord VST, but CineSamples Black Friday sale really came through this year. This Harpsichord sounds SIQQQ 🤙🤙🤙 It's such a unique and iconic instrument. It's perfect for those Medieval/Renaissance/Dark Fantasy vibes, which is fitting for the antagonist motif I've been dying to write. I originally intended to compose a boss fight with this, but it ended up being more of an interchangeable villain or level theme. The boss fight will come later and it's gonna he*kin RIP dude. Harpsichord battle themes are intense and I'm looking forward to seeing how this VST sounds in that scenario, especially once it's combined with various other instrument layers to added intensity. That's part of why I chose to write a solo Harpsichord piece. I wanted to know how it would sound, and it really can hold the fort on its own. Just imagine this in a game setting; You're adventuring through this castle with this theme playing, and then you encounter the antagonist and all of a sudden the music just explodes into chaos. 😱😱😱

Dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow…🐉🐄

Oh HELL YEAH BROTHER I love me some world/ethnic music and I've always wanted to try and write something in a Japanese style. However, I was also feelin' another 2D Platformer Level Theme/Boss Theme, so I chose Chiptune instruments. I really vibe with those styles of games and they're so much fun to write. The Shamisen has such an interesting sound to it, it almost sounds like every note is being quickly slid into it with a quick decay. It's a gr8t sound for these quick, upbeat riffs and arpeggios. It just sounds so intense! The Koto also has a noticeably unique sound. I think I could've done more with it like adding extra vibrato and bends because from the research I did, that's what I heard and to me, that's what gives it that traditional & iconic sound, but I wasn't confident in my skills. Oops 🙈 Also MIDI is just really a pain to automate bends and vibrato and nobody got time for that. For the other iconic Japanese sounds, I used the Hyōshigi which is just instantly recognizable, and I also used some percussive tom work which is commonly heard in ethnic/world pieces. I decided to use more of a Drum and Bass direction for those respective instruments because I like the way they sound in this style of music, and they help beef up the overall composition since the Chiptune leads are sort of thin on their own. Combining the Percs & Bass with the Japanese instruments creates a cool fusion of genres, which I'm a huge fan of. Lastly, I used an Airy Pad to help set the setting and provide some ambience the he*kin concept I was going for! Imagine you're out adventuring through a clifftop monastery, in search of a legendary warrior who has been exiled from their clan. The reason? Well…that's for you to decide in your game!

I have been in the House Music scene for nearly six decades. My journey spans from dancer to blogger and currently DJ. I run a German-based radio show called Sounds from the Chi. I am currently involved in various Twitch Raid Trains.

You have seen me play at gigs like House on Paseo festival in September 2018 and at the former Mid Nightclub in early January 2019. In March 2019 I opened for Sugar Shack Family Reunion at Barcelona Nightclub in Austin, TX during the South by Southwest Festival. In June 2019, October 2019, September 2021, September 2022 and, May 2023 I played at various gigs and online Radio in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
