This podcast features the keynote address from Un/Disciplining Reading, a symposium which took place in the Royal Irish Academy and Kilmainham Gaol on 15-16 September 2023. The event was part of UCD's ‘Thresholds of Knowledge’ research strand, and generously supported by the UCD College of Arts and Humanities and the UCD Humanities Institute.

The keynote was given by Christina Lupton from the University of Copenhagen and the University of Warwick). Christina's paper 'The Reader as Part-time Worker' was introduced by Porscha Fermanis from UCD.

"Unskinning the Rights of Nature: Sacred Sites and Mining Manias in the wake of Geontopower" by Professor Elizabeth A. Povinelli (Columbia).

UCD Environmental Humanities research kicked off with a bang at UCD this autumn 2023, with a talk by Elizabeth Povinelli, chaired by Sarah Comyn, as part of Sarah's IRC Laureate-funded MINERALS Seminar Series on Methodologies concerning Extractivism. 

Funded by the Irish Research Council MINERALS Laureate project.

Abstract:  In 2020 in order to expand their iron ore mine, Rio Tinto blew up an Indigenous sacred site located in a cave showing continuous occupation since the last Ice Age, over 46,000 years ago. The demolition of the Juukun Gorge site is one in a series of mining atrocities in Indigenous lands. In her talk, Povinelli addresses how the public protection and legal defence struggle to extract themselves from the grip of geontopower.

Elizabeth A. Povinelli is Franz Boas Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies at Columbia University. She is a critical theorist and filmmaker. Her critical writing has focused on developing a critical theory of late settler liberalism that would support an anthropology of the otherwise. This potential theory has unfolded across five books, numerous essays, and a thirty-five years of collaboration with her Indigenous colleagues in north Australia including, most recently, six films they have created as members of the Karrabing Film Collective. Geontologies: A Requiem to Late Liberalism was the 2017 recipient of the Lionel Trilling Book Award and The Cunning of Recognition was an Art Forum Best Book of the Year.

'From Modern Crisis to Permacrisis and Polycrisis. Epistemological Perspectives and Interventions’ was a symposium which took place in University College Dublin in May 2025 and was supported by the UCD Strategic and Major Initiative Scheme.

In this episode a recording of panel 8 at the symposium - Imagining Futures in the Age of Permacrisis. This panel featured: Aleida Assmann (Konstanz) who spoke about ‘Changing Concepts of the Future’. Anne Fuchs (UCD) spoke about the openness of the future. John Barry (Queens), ‘Fluxed Futures or "Barbarism if we're lucky": Radical Hope and the Responsibility of Intellectuals’; Jeanne Riou (UCD), ‘Permacrisis, Epochal Threshold and the Problem of Time’. The panel was chaired by Marek Tamm (Tallinn).
