“Bord de mer” is an immersive audio experience that captures an underwater atmosphere through my perspective.
 I’m fascinated by the contrast—the soothing calm of gentle waves, and the unsettling mystery of the ocean’s depths.

Bord De Mer / Seaside (Audio Experience)

I designed my sound composition based on a few concepts I have learned in this class. My first intent going into the making of this piece was to create something that melds together creativity, emotion, and a showcase of the ocean and what beauty it brings. I want my piece to help tell the story of whales and show a glimpse into what their life sounds like, while also bridging the gap between sea and land, pairing whales with human made sounds. I also really wanted to highlight the concept of deep listening and creative exploration. This piece is meant to awaken emotions of beauty and nostalgia, for me it revolves around this concept of mourning your childhood and innocence, of how life used to be and feel. 
	
Creating my composition I wanted to highlight mainly whale songs, because it really helps evoke that feeling of bittersweet sadness or longing for the past, but I also wanted to highlight them because they are the main focus of my piece, a big part in bridging the gap of land and water. After that, I added background ambiences that were actually underwater recordings of rain and beak clicks. Then, probably my favorite part of the piece, was implementing some sounds that were human made. I added a reenactment of a whale song using a creaking door, a woman’s humming, and a background song that I felt fit and complimented the piece as a whole. Overall, I still made sure that the whale songs were the most prominent part of my piece, so that it would have the room to shine as the major part of this story. I implemented all these sounds off of the Freesound website.
	
Working with listening as the only medium was something new to me, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It was different from any other piece of art I’ve made before. I found myself many times closing my eyes while compiling my sound clips or editing them together and simply thinking of the emotions and message I was trying to make. There were moments were I swear I could feel those emotions in the moment instead of simply thinking of them. This is definitely something I wouldn’t mind doing again as I felt very connected to this piece and the intentions/story behind it. I hope it does a good job of conveying the ocean’s beauty and importance to me as well as feelings that are a core part of who I am.

The snail's progression, following the spiral, symbolizes the idea that spiritual growth occurs one step at a time. Snails carry their homes with them, making their shells a symbol of resilience. This can remind individuals to find strength and security within themselves, no matter where their life journey takes them.
