Bryan Beverly is a lifelong Michigan resident, and takes pride in the quality of education he received in public schools and is passionate about providing similar impactful experiences with students in today’s urban schools. He holds a Ph. D. in Educational Policy from Michigan State University, is an alum and co-coordinator of Michigan's Educational Policy Fellowship Program, and is an elected member of the Lansing Board of Education.
 
Dr. Beverly is currently the Director of the Office of K-12 Outreach in the College of Education – where his work is centered on school turnaround efforts and instructional leadership. Prior to returning to MSU for his PhD, Dr. Beverly worked as an education consultant for the KRA Corporation and the Lansing School District. His other professional experiences include work with the President’s Council of State Universities, Michigan; the State of Michigan, Office of the Governor; GEAR-UP, MSU; and the Michigan Association of Counties. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Anthropology from Olivet College and a master’s degree in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education Administration from Michigan State University. Dr. Beverly is married to Christel and they have four daughters.

Two exceptional ensembles present a fascinating collective look at the ud, the star of the Ud Festival.

The Madar Ensemble, including Palestinian ud player Nizar Rohana and Dutch bass player Tony Overwater, performs during this special evening with a trio consisting of Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich, clarinetist Maarten Ornstein and lute player Mike Fentross.

Together the ensembles present an overview of the ud. They will play works from the classical Arabic muwashshah and the Dutch Renaissance traditions, as well as contemporary compositions by Rohana, Ornstein and Overwater. Thus, Arab music, renaissance and jazz merge into a unique new sound.

Spectacular new approach of the ud, the Arabic lute, in a dynamic jazz setting.

Mehmet Polat uses a traditional Arabic instrument to bring together a world of styles, in a line-up with double bass and drums. The result is a tight and energetic sound, as can be heard on the album The Promise, which appeared earlier this year. Special guest at the BIMHUIS is Gijs Levelt, trumpeter and master of South Indian music, who’s known from Amsterdam Klezmer Band and Spinifex.

Mehmet Polat, born in Turkey and living in Amsterdam, is internationally recognized as the innovator of the ud. He increased the range of the instrument by adding two bass strings and developed a special technique for the left hand. With his roots firmly in Anatolian folk music and Ottoman classical music, Polat explores styles and traditions from all over the world in his compositions.
