British-Bahraini trumpeter and composer Yazz Ahmed shares a new track, ‘Into The Night’. A standout piece from her forthcoming album, A Paradise In The Hold, (out 28 February via Night Time Stories), the new single is constructed with carefully assembled layers of sound, all hinging on recordings of percussive, joyful hubbub at Yazz’s family home in Bahrain. Deeply personal, it is one of the pieces from the album that wears its Bahraini influence proudly whilst also being a remarkable celebration of female independence. 

On her new single, Yazz offers: “This short interlude continues the narrative of the celebratory song of independence, Dancing Barefoot. We follow the reluctant bride outside, dancing, laughing and singing into the night. Adding a very personal touch to the piece, the track features members of my own family, recorded at our home in Bahrain, providing the party hubbub and the joyful ululations. I recorded a fragment of the original melody over a drum ensemble, which was created entirely by Corrina Silvester, with multi-tracked layers of percussion and clapping. It is perhaps the most purely Bahraini piece on the album.”

Due 28 February, A Paradise In The Hold is an album of yearning. It’s about Yazz’s dual heritage, drawing on traditional music and folklore as well as her own personal experience as a British-Bahraini woman. A sweeping epic where tradition meets innovation, she melds ancient rhythms with contemporary musicianship. The record is a tribute to the sorrowful songs of Bahrain’s pearl divers, the strength of Arab women, and the celebratory rhythms of women's traditional drumming circles, while also telling the story of Yazz’s own decade-long voyage of self-discovery. 

The album also marks Yazz’s first foray into writing lyrics, in both English and Arabic, bringing a new dimension to her expansive sound. The project features an impressive roster of collaborators, including vocalists Natacha Atlas, Brigitte Beraha, and percussionist Corrina Silvester. An Ivor Novello Award-winning composer and one of the most innovative trumpet players of her generation, with A Paradise In The Hold, Yazz Ahmed delivers a groundbreaking fusion of tradition and innovation, creating a contemporary jazz project that is set to make a lasting impact on the genre.

این اثر، پیش از هر چیز، ضدنژادپرستی‌ست.
یک اعتراض موسیقایی‌ست علیه تبعیض نژادی، طبقاتی و ساختاری که مرز نمی‌شناسد. با لحن کمدی سیاه و روی پایه‌های موسیقی جَز، جهان را نه آن‌طور که باید باشد، بلکه آن‌طور که واقعاً هست، ترسیم می‌کند.
نقشه‌ای‌ست جهانی و طبقاتی که از شمال تهران تا آفریقا کشیده شده؛ آدم‌هایی که با سرنوشتی تکراری زیست می‌کنند: دیده می‌شوند، اما جایشان تنگ است. صدایشان شنیده می‌شود، اما به‌حساب نمی‌آید. حقوقشان ثبت است، اما پرداخت نمی‌شود.
این اثر نقدی‌ست سیستماتیک به همه‌چیز:
از اقتصاد گرفته تا نژاد، از آموزش و هنر تا هویت و حتی برخوردهای خیابانی. نه شعاری، نه استعاری. تصاویرش دقیق‌اند و بدون افهٔ هنری. خونسردند و گزنده؛ درست مثل جهانی که نقد می‌کند

در این دنیا، بازیگران نقش‌ها را عوض می‌کنند اما نمایش همان است. کودکی در آفریقا با آرزوهایی شبیه به نوجوانی در تجریش می‌سوزد. ساختارها فرق می‌کنند، اما نتیجه همیشه یکی‌ست: خستگی، سرکوب، و معامله.

در پایان، وقتی همه‌چیز گفته شده و همه‌چیز فهمیده شده، یک جمله باقی می‌ماند:
«بفرما بحث تعطیل.»
نه به‌عنوان نقطهٔ پایان، که به‌مثابه درِ بسته‌ای که حالا مخاطب باید یا بکوبد، یا بازش کند. چون هیچ‌کس پاسخگو نیست.

Lewis’s music is expansive, intricate, conceptual, scanning the vast spectrum of Black music. Combined with his own cultural heritage as a native south Londoner and black British Caribbean, Lewis delivers music that blurs the boundaries between jazz, hip-hop, gospel, garage and grime and many other genres too.

He is an In-demand session musician and arranger, he is a member of many high profile groups including House Gospel Choir, MOBO award winning gospel artist Rachel Kerr , The Last Dinosaur, Boadi. Last year saw him tour with Florence + The Machine in the states and sessions including Cat Burns, Primal Scream and Waiting For Smith. 

He is currently working on his next release which will be a full album following his debut e.p States of Being which has had support from BBC Introducing Mixtape (Tom Robinson BBC Radio 6), BBC Radio London (Robert Elms Show) Worldwide FM, Soho Radio, Jazz FM, Twisted Soul to name a few.
