When Russia began their "special military operation" in Ukraine in 2021, we instantaneously heard a unison chorus declare this was an "unprovoked" attack on a free democratic ally. Unsurprisingly, the usual pro-war voices on both sides (Lyndsey Graham, Chris Murphy), planted the flag for the fight. But left-leaning Americans, as well, obediently pitched "Stand With Ukraine" lawn signs in their yards, and stuck Ukraine flag pins, bumper stickers and social media memes, declaring their support of a place most may not have been able to point to on a world map.

For most of us, the 2020 impeachment trial of Donald Trump was the first time we had heard anything related to the relatively small Eastern European country. The president stood accused of withholding urgent weapons shipments to Ukraine in exchange for the Ukraine president, Zelensky, investigating Joe Biden and his family's business dealings in the historically corrupt sovereignty. Few questioned why we needed to send weapons to Ukraine at that moment, when President Obama denied the shipment of lethal weapons to Ukraine for his entire presidency.

The ongoing war in the eastern part of Ukraine, beginning in 2014, was seldom mentioned in mainstream news in the US. When it was, it was referred to as internal skirmishes between Ukraine and "Russian-backed separatists." Little context was given to the fact that the entire Eastern part of Ukraine, geographically called the Donbass region, was populated by  Russian-speakers, who identified more with what they viewed as their Russian motherland to their East, than the increasingly-westernized Europeans in Kiev. In all elections held in Ukraine, the Donbass oblasts (states) solidly voted for candidates who preferred cohesion with Russia over NATO and the US. 

(For sake of brevity, I cannot get into the long struggle between these people who believed they were fighting for their right to hold onto their Russian heritage, language, and religion, and the nationalists in Kiev seeking to strip them of their traditions. Nor can I get into the even longer history of provocations against Russia, leading up to the 2021 invasion, the so-called start of the war. All of this is well-documented.)

Because the US media pitted Trump against the government of Ukraine in the narrative surrounding the first impeachment, large swaths of Americans began holding up Ukraine as a bulwark against Trump.  For the previous three years, allegations by Democrats that Trump's campaign had colluded with the other side, Russia, were relentlessly investigated and litigated in the US press. The intrepid special investigator into Russian collusion, Robert Mueller, who Democrats were convinced was going to lead Trump to prison in handcuffs, had found insufficient evidence of collusion less than a year before. But the die-hards continued to insist on Trump's guilt.

The rendering of Trump, standing in between Ukraine's struggle, in favor of the Russian aggressor, was therefore, firmly etched in America's psyche, and little push was needed for so many to "Stand With Ukraine."  

No one knows what is going to happen in the process of ongoing negotiations. Trump wants to be seen as the peace president, while the other side insists he is an agent of mayhem. For 3 years, the Biden administration and NATO countries escalated the chaos of war and undermined all negotiations between the warring parties. As the outcome is looking worse for Ukraine daily, the tale that Trump is to blame for Ukraine's potential loss will likely be on Trump's political enemies' best-seller list for many seasons to come.
