Jason and Rob rewind to 1994 to review the independent crime film that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year - a film that spends considerable screen time devoted to monologues and casual conversations, and features an ironic combination of humour and strong violence.

Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. Their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), his actress wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), and master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel).

Continuing the journey into 90s grimdark that we began with Dark City, the Slice of Cherry Guys examine Andrew Niccol's gleaming gene-obssessed nightmare as not too dissimilar from the one we inhabit now. With a (mostly) solid cast, harrowing plot and striking cinematography, Gattaca stands the test of time as another 90s sci-fi classic.

Gattaca (1997) is one of those BIG IDEA sci-fi movies that is more interested in making you go hmmmm than it is in much else.  So if you are into glacially-paced cautionary tales about the societal dangers of genetically engineering humans as the only way to achieve success in life, then this is the movie for you!  Plus, it has identity theft!  And a murder mystery!  And a vaguely familiar retro-futuro design that has been used in countless other, better cautionary sci-fi movies about BIG IDEAS!  With Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law!  We have seen the future (again), and it is Gattaca.
