Phil O’Donoghue is the Media Officer for UnionsWA and was actively involved in volunteer coordination and training in WA for the YES23 campaign during the Voice Referendum. He shares his story of the failure of the Yes for the Voice referendum campaign and advocates for Australians to embrace uncomfortable conversations, political debate and get involved in grassroots activism.

Truth Telling in Walyalup is a collection of stories from Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians that were shared in local resident’s backyards all around Walyalup/Fremantle. The stories were reflections about Australia's shared colonial history and imagining a better future toward reconciliation. These stories were produced in partnership with and made possible by generous funding from the City of Fremantle. 039// Prevent Duty: What is it and how does it impact education?

This episode kicks off the first in a series we hope to continue featuring SOAR (Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees) activists offering us their words of wisdom as the labor movement enters a time of great change and upheaval. Today we speak with Nellie Caraballo,&nbsp;a former USW staff rep and public sector worker who is now a proud SOAR member, about the early challenges she endured on the job that ended with her stepping up in her local union and in her community.&nbsp; She also reflects on what she learned about people during her organizing days, the hope she sees in the next generation, and her advice to them about the importance of fighting for positive social and economic change. Episode 57 - Can Federal Workers Beat DOGE?

Strike Song of the Year 2025, selected in (and written for) the general strike song contest put on by Labor Notes and the Pittsburgh Labor Choir. Teach-in at 11 AM Central Time, April 2025, online. 

The song is written to be easy for people to pick up and sing- so the crowd can easily sing "Hold fast! All together- hold the line!" in call-and-response, and also sing the chorus.

I intentionally recycle some lines and motifs from other union songs of mine, to feed those pieces into this general strike anthem. This includes the "Hold the Line" motif that now has appeared in two versions of "Holding the Line", and in Jessica's song of the same name. "Put your tools down and walk out" is from the Big 3 Auto Strike song, and "fire in your belly and iron in your spine" is from the Marathon Strike Song. Several other lines reference revolutionary quotes from Durruti's "New world in our hearts" to Connolly's "We demand only the earth".

From the 1800s to yesterday afternoon, women and girls across the United States have led historic organizing campaigns, and today we’re honoring one of these powerful yet lesser known activists whose story deserves to be told. Emma Tenayuca was only 18 when she began organizing workers for the first time in San Antonio, Texas, in the 1930s, but even then she understood what a good wage could mean to the thousands of Mexican women keeping the city’s pecan shelling thriving while they themselves lived in slums. Her story shows that anyone, no matter your age or gender, can lead a mass movement for economic justice and gain the trust of workers when sticking to your principles and keeping their fight at the center of your heart. Emma Tenayuca and the Pecan Shellers' Strike

Leslie is joined by Sean O'Brien, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

They begin the interview by acknowledging the accomplishments that President O'Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman have helped their Union to achieve during their three years heading the organization.
With 80,000 new members organized, great successes at the negotiating table including many of their best contracts ever like at UPS and Anheuser-Busch, an empowered rank-and-file membership that has waged over 250 strikes and led bargaining themselves against some of the world’s largest employers, the O’Brien-Zuckerman administration has charted one of the most defining and positive chapters in Teamsters history.

Next, Sean shares with the audience the Union's contract campaign with their 10,000 Teamsters aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). They're fighting for a fair contract with United, who raked in over $4 billion dollars in profits last year, but is lowballing the Teamsters at the bargaining table.
At the same time, the airline wants to outsource maintenance to communist China and South America.
Sean explains how United Airlines Teamsters are ensuring safety in the skies, and that Teamster members will not accept anything less than a strong new contract with the industry-leading wages and job protections they have earned.

Lastly, Leslie and Sean discuss how, following a credible strike threat, more than 1,000 newly organized drivers and warehouse workers at United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) in Florida, Georgia, and Illinois have ratified their first Teamsters contracts.
Represented by Teamsters Locals 26, 79, 728, and 769, UNFI workers have secured agreements that deliver significant wage increases, improved benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan.

The two examine why so many cannabis workers are joining the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

To add some perspective, the Teamsters represent over 1,000 cannabis workers in six different states. They've also bargained the strongest contracts in the industry for workers at a number of multi-state operators, which are the largest players in the US cannabis industry.

Tens of thousands of Teamsters across the continent are members of the union’s growing Food Processing Division. The division represents many classifications of worker, including production line workers, mechanics, forklift drivers, machine operators and more. They help prepare, process and move just about every kind of food you find at the grocery store, including meats, dairy vegetables, fruits and grains.
