"It's been an apocalyptic night for families in Gaza," said UNICEF's Communications Specialist Rosalia Bollen on Tuesday. 

Deadly Israeli airstrikes resumed on Monday reportedly killing hundreds.

"Slightly after 2am local time, everyone was woken up brutally by the very loud explosions and the incessant bombardments all around us," said Ms. Bollen, adding that she could hear people screaming outside UNICEF facilities just minutes after the raid.

"It's been terrifying for families and children because the moment a plane approaches, you know it is going to drop a bomb," she also said, adding that children in particular were frightened of the warplanes.

"Those seconds before the impact, they actually become an eternity."

"Arbitrary arrest and detention have become a permanent fixture of the repressive tactics of Belarusian authorities," Karinna Moskalenko, Chair of the Group of Independent Experts on Belarus told the Human Right Council on Wednesday. 

The experts' mandate consisted of documenting instances of torture and human rights violations in the country, including in prisons.  

Some of the violations described in a new report "amount to the crimes against humanity of political persecution and imprisonment", added Ms. Moskalenko, who works in an independent capacity and is not a UN staff member.

United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) chief Jorge Moreira da Silva on Wednesday told journalists that the Israeli strike on the agency's facilities in Gaza, which has killed a UN staff member and wounded at least five others, was "not an accident". 

"It cannot be categorized as an accident," Mr. Moreira da Silva said at a press briefing. "What is happening in Gaza is unconscionable."

The organisation's chief gave his condolences to those affected and their families, adding that he was "shocked and devastated by this tragic news".

"What we do know is that an explosive ordinance was dropped or fired at infrastructure and detonated inside the building," he also said. 

"We don't know at this stage what type it was. We don't know if it was an air-droppde weapon, if it was artillery or rocket."

Córdoba in Argentina, Fortaleza in Brazil and Manchester in the UK accepted prizes in Paris for their public health achievements, at the Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit, co-hosted by the UN World Health Organization (WHO), Bloomberg Philanthropies and Vital Strategies.

The city of Córdoba picked up an accolade for replacing sugary drinks with water, helping to lower obesity rates.

"We're seeing a lot of progress in local leadership and mayors from across the world taking on the fight and trying to lower rates of the world's biggest killers, heart disease, diabetes, cancers and respiratory diseases," said Jaimie Guerra, Communications Officer at WHO.

In a joint appeal, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, and the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Monday urged all countries to step up to support the displaced Rohingya – the world’s largest stateless population. 

The humanitarian situation in Cox’s Bazar – home to around one million Rohingya in Bangladesh - has worsened. 

“This is not a place where people want to live,” said IOM Director-General Amy Pope. “It's frightening. If you are a young woman, you do not leave your tent at night.”
