We live in an era of excess. The main obstacle to eliminating poverty is distribution. In the latest episode of Left To Burn, Battleground editors Josh White and John Foster discuss strategies for addressing this conundrum. Some think that universal basic income is the answer. Others pin their hopes on universal basic services, using more expansive means to achieve a similar goal.

Universal Basic Everything: Excess for Everyone

In this episode, Richard Kemp speaks to people from both sides of the Universal Basic Income (UBI) debate from a recent issue of the Journal of Poverty and Social Justice. 

Howard Robert Reed and Matthew Thomas Johnson argue that UBI is affordable and feasible, whereas Donald Hirsch believes the necessary funds for UBI could be used to cut poverty in more targeted ways.

They explore the different UBI schemes that have been tested, discuss what an alternative, reformed welfare system may look like, and outline the changes they all agree are needed to improve the lives of people both below, and above, the minimum income standard.

Most people's lives are defined by the exchange of labour for a wage. But what if the state gave us all a regular wage, with zero strings attached, to spend as we wish? That's the core idea behind universal basic income, or UBI.

With England's first UBI pilot programme now underway, Aaron talks to Will Stronge, director of research at the Autonomy think tank, about what UBI could achieve and how it might help us rethink the stories we tell ourselves about work.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents -  One of the most controversial ideas being considered in the SRD’s Poverty Reduction Plan is advocating for a Universal Basic Income (UBI). There are numerous examples showing this is an effective way to riase people out of poverty. The problem is too much of the financial impact may fall on the diminishing middle class ($50,000-$135,000 per anno in BC) rather than the rich who appear to be increasingly growing richer.    

Many Cortes Island residents would benefit from a Universal Basic Income. The recent Housing Needs Report states that our median wage was about $15,000 lower than the District’s norm.(1)  According to data from the 2021 census, only 27% of the labour force have full time employment. The remainder work part time.(2) 

Quadra Island is only marginally better off than Cortes. The median wage was $14,000 lower than the District’s norm and 36% of the labour force had full time jobs.(3)

Both islands also have residents whose take-home income would most likely shrink if a Universal Basic Income were introduced. (Someone has to pay the taxes needed to support such a system!)
