This lecture discusses the 20th century philosopher and historian of ideas, Pierre Hadot, and focuses on chapter 11 of his book, Philosophy As a Way of Life. 

He discusses the short history Hadot provides us with, in which ancient philosophy was oriented around what he calls "philosophy as a way of life", including Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy. Christian philosophy develops in west in two directions, that of the Church Fathers and monastic authors, where it remains philosophy as a way of life, and philosophy understood more and more as theory or as an instrument for theology, found in the Universities and taking the shape of Scholasticism. In the modern period, while there are still some philosophers and movements who go past that model of philosophy, the majority of it remains within that perspective.

What would it look like if we let go of command, control and management, and allowed the University to grow and thrive in ways that can't be predicted in advance but might exceed our wildest dreams? 

Join us to celebrate the achievements of Prof. Cathy Elliott. Recorded one day after her inaugural lecture, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career, Cathy talks about her wild approach to education. Cathy is one of those rare educators who always strives to focus less on grades and more on inspiring her pupils. She has spearheaded un-grading campaigns at UCL, as well as inclusive curriculums and student-led projects on inclusivity, belonging, political philosophy and international relations. She is a co-director of UCL Centre for the Pedagogy of Politics, a co-convenor of the Political Studies Association Teaching and Learning Network, and Vice-Dean Education for UCL Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences. 

Cathy has made history as our department's first academic on the teaching track to be promoted to Professor. This in itself reflects Cathy's thoughts on education - if we remove some of the boundaries and change some of the criteria , wonderful things might happen (inc. it might be easier for teaching track academics to progress to prof)!

Having exposed Britain’s higher-education institutions ever more deeply to the world market, and stripped them of much of their excellence in the process, international students are now voting with their feet, preferring to head to new (and far cheaper) centres of excellence – China in particular.

Fee-strapped Dundee university faces bankruptcy; staff expected to pay

Historically white, and male, colleges and universities in the U.S. began to diversify their undergraduate bodies in the 1960s and have made considerable progress since then.  But progress on faculty diversity has stalled.  That has wide-ranging implications for everything from university completion rates for students of color to the presence of new voices in medical research.  Universities deserve much of the blame, for they implemented programs to diversify the faculty that their own social scientists had long known to be ineffective in the business world.  An analysis of the efficacy of diversity programs at 600 schools over 20 years sheds light on how universities can build faculties that look more like their students, and the wider society, in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity.

Frank Dobbin is Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard & visiting fellow at Sciences Po, CEE. 
He holds a B.A. from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.  His Inventing Equal Opportunity (Princeton U. Press 2009) shows how HR managers and activists defined what it meant to discriminate in the eyes of the law, broadening the definition over time. His Getting to Diversity: What Works and What Doesn't with Alexandra Kalev (Harvard U. Press [Belknap] 2022) looks at the effectiveness of dozens of different diversity programs, in over 800 companies across more than 30 years, to answer the questions: Which programs help, which hurt, and how can harmful programs be improved?  Dobbin and Kalev are now investigating university programs designed to promote faculty diversity, using similar methods to sort out which are most effective.  Dobbin has held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the Radcliffe Institute, the Safra Center for Ethics, and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study.
