Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Nebraska, and one in every three Nebraskans will hear the words “you have cancer” in their lifetime. A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is especially devastating, as someone diagnosed with pancreatic cancer today has a 10% chance of living for five years.

Dr. Kelsey Klute is determined to turn the tide. A gastrointestinal medical oncologist, she leads a UNMC research team studying new methods of treating pancreatic cancer.

In this episode of “Leading Nebraska”, we talk with Kelsey Klute about how clinical trials and looking at novel ways to find and treat this cancer early can improve the rates of survival and make a difference for patients and their families.

New research into cattle pinkeye may help to prevent this disease.
Pinkeye in cattle is very contagious. Severe cases can cause blindness  and decreased weight gain in calves resulting in lost cattle revenue for producers.

4/6/23 - New research into cattle pinkeye

Soon frost will occur in Texas fields and pastures.  Livestock producers need to be aware that the frost can create prussic acid in their pastures. There is a method to reduce the risk of prussic acid exposure to livestock.

10/24/23 - Frost can produce prussic acid in grazing forages

The Nebraska Promise is the University of Nebraska System’s free tuition program. The program covers undergraduate tuition at the University of Nebraska for Nebraska students who have a family income of $65,000 or less and meet academic qualifications.

It covers the cost of tuition above what federal Pell Grants and other financial aid pays for, helping students to pursue a degree with minimal cost. The Nebraska Promise applies to all University of Nebraska campuses. With students only paying for room, board, books and fees, they can max out their course load, expand their extracurricular opportunities, have more time to study, and pursue non-paying internships that will prepare them for the job market.

Mayra Flores, a recent business administration graduate from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, was the first in her family to earn a college degree. In this episode of “Leading Nebraska,” we talk with Mayra about Nebraska Promise—and how it made higher education a possibility for her.

Leading Nebraska, Episode 24: Mayra Flores, “Opening the World of Higher Education”

Commissioned by the Bryan High School Band in Omaha, NE and conducted by Daniel Abrahams, Above All Others is inspired by the meaning of the name “Omaha.” In his July 4, 1876, address marking the centennial of the founding of the United States, General Estabrook said, “And so we were and so we have been from that day to this, and so we are now, above all others in importance, on the stream, and so, aided by the same good genius, we shall ever remain.” The work is performed by the University of Nebraska Wind Ensemble.

Joel Phillips taught at Westminster Choir College for 39 years. He is co-author of several textbooks in W. W. Norton’s Musician’s Guide series, including The Musician's Guide to Fundamentals, now the mostly widely used musical text in its market. His crowning achievement was becoming the 2015 Grand Prize Winner of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest [https://www.bulwer-lytton.com/2015], an international competition that selects from among thousands of entries the proposed opening sentence to the worst(!) of all possible novels.
